Frame cradle wall thickness
« on: 17.12. 2023 16:51 »
I've got to weld up a hole in the cradle tube at the tub near the join with the top tube.  Looks like the seat has rubbed and its corroded.  Cleaned up the hole, read a lot of posts on here, but still a bit hazy on the tube wall thickness.  Am I right with 14SWG (about 2mm)?
I'll clean back to 2mm of metal then make a flush patch same thickness and MIG it.
thanks

just send it to my magic welderer man in clay cross derbyshire , he tigged up about 20 drilled holes of different sizes in places all over on my notrun frame, and his ally welding or building up is amazing. i gave him a piece of shaped ally to weld to my inner timing case for a 3 to 1 drive rev counter, he gave me the piece back and said building it up was easier and better . the holes in the notrun frame i think were used for different things when the frame was used for racing, what a chap he is 50p a hole and even finished off nicely .

The tube going down towards the swinging arm is 14 swg. The tube going horizontal towards the top shocker mount is 16 swg.

Guys, many thanks. *smile*  I'll clean it up until I can get a good 14 SWG edge then fashion a repair.  I like the guy in Derbyshire but I'm near Heathrow *sad2*.

It should be internally braced as a weld is a casting and the tube is wrought
the original wall thickness would have been imperial UK size, no longer manufactured so you will have to get some heavy wall tube & machine it down to fit.
Best job is to braize the insert into both side of the frame ( hard to do
Next best is to make it a light interfearence fit, chill the insert , place it in the tube leaving a 2mm gap to fill with weld .

Well its done.  Its not in a highly loaded location but I really would like to understand how it got there.  Looks like the seat foam held water against it over many years, but that's just a best guess.
