Cheers Musky.  I don't have issues with oil in the primary, but I'm looking at a possible solution to slow it down.  If I can prevent it happening a bit during riding weather, that'd be fine for me (a week or two would be good).  I could then let it drain down during lay ups and change it at the same time.

I had a look at both the engines I have - in bits.  One has been rebuilt and the other was a box of bits.  The rebuilt engine is very suspect so I'm rebuilding the spare engine instead. The pumps are off so I could push a rod into both the oil feed holes and feel the force need to move the ball off its seat.  Interesting: the "rebuilt" engine which has a new screw on the ball spring took almost no force but the untouched engine it took a small but definite push.
My thought is take the pump off and gently feel how the ball sits, also if there is anything keeping it off the seat, a bit of gasket for example.
