For Sale - 1950 Golden Flash
« on: 30.09. 2023 11:30 »
I'm selling my 1950 Golden Flash.  It's non-standard hence a very light weight.  I've owned it for 20 years and done many trips to the John Bull Rally in Belgium, the longest trip was 700 miles in 5 days with no problems. It starts first kick.

It has a 1953 engine with a Road Rocket cam and 7.25:1 pistons, so has a bit of go. Motolec have refurbished the dynamo with 12v windings, and a DVR2 regulator and 12v halogen headlamp are fitted. It has spin on oil filter (a couple of spares are included), a "Premier" concentric carb, and a stainless siamese exhaust.  The tyres (Mitas) have 5mm tread and are on alloy rims / stainless spokes, covered by alloy mudguards.  It has double damped forks with a TLS brake.   Recently a new rear chain & rear sprocket/brake was put on.  The speedo is a Gagg chronometric and very accurate. There are many stainless nuts/bolts and fork seal holders and plunger covers are also stainless. Comet panniers are included. Everything works.

Reasonable price is £3,500

(in East Lancashire, 2 miles from Junction 1 of M66)

Bergs and Worty, you are both wrong. That long nut is exactly where it should be.
If you really want to be rivet counters, the generator cover is too late for the bike.

But surely it'd make more sense if you just used a standard nut *????* *????*, or is this just BSA being weird again *roll*  I get the nut in the recess, but standing out like that is odd (unless it clears the dynamo end cap or crankcases).  In any event, it does look as if it's out of place there *dunno* *dunno* *whistle* *good3* *beer*

Remember that when these bikes were new, the average Joe would have had only the toolkit supplied with the bike, and maybe a couple of well worn bicycle spanners and a bent screwdriver. Add to that the coal hammer and that was it. Of course a standard nut would be easy to reach with a box spanner or socket, if the fella had that luxury. As it stands that extended nut makes access with an open ended spanner simple. Roy Bacon's book has numerous examples featured with the extended nut next to the dynamo cover.

Not much interest in my Golden Flash at the price I put on it last September.  So price reduction to £3,000.  Fighting inflation at every step!

I'd keep it then Ted, let it appreciate for a while.  Alternatively, I could keep it 'in trust' for you *whistle* *grins* *wink2* *bright idea*

There's some really nice A10's on e-bay at just now, good condition and well below what they would have cost to build.  I suspect there is an oversupply at the  moment.  If you don't need the money urgently hold on for 6 months.  I think the prices have dipped a bit too low.  There are genuine (not fake) RGS at 8k and genuine Gold Stars at 10k.  I think a straight Golden Flash is a nice bike so don't sell to cheap if you don't have to.

This has reminded me, I sold my Harley last year.  If ever there is a bike that will attract chancers and time-wasters it's a Harley.  So I was putting it off, I was looking for £3k as its was a '98 Sportster.  Was searching for a similar bike locally to get a feel of the market when I hit upon a local dealer advertising a commission sale service.  Short story is they collected the bike, advertised it, sold it, took 20% commission and I got £3,120.
OK it took close to a year to sell, their advice was price high and wait as this is not a price dependent sale, its about waiting for the right person.  This could apply to your bike too.  They gave it a service and MOT (included in the deductions) and offered it will finance. They did a good write up and good photos and each month I'd get a update on how much interest.  After 6 months they advised dropping a few £100 to get more interest which I did.  Overall their advice was spot on and I got £120 over the price I wanted with zero hassle since the bike was collected from my home (also inc).
So look around and see if any dealers in your are will do a commission sale, and be prepared to wait, don't get into a price race to the bottom on a nice bike.
I would also suggest putting it in Mathewsons, their site gets loads of traffic, they work hard and you get the money.  Go on their website and look at sold prices, I think A10s do well there.  Again its zero hassle.  I suspect that you put your bike up for £2k and still not get a buyer because the right people are not seeing it.
