Ideas?
« on: 30.08. 2023 22:10 »

Taken from another group
What on earth is this?

Someone suggested it could be two Tigress scooter engines.

Not that I know jack about Tigress scooters, but looking at the pictures, that seems a good guess. Another view is, "Bringing in the Funk!"

Apparently, but not from Ariel. Is it four Tigress engines? Don't listen to me, Someone who knows something is about to chime in,

I presume the Tigress is a twin.

If it is based on the Tigress, it's two engines..maybe back to back....Original Scooter Design was a parallel vertical twin, exhaust pipes exited to the side, then carried backwards to a silencer above the rear wheel. Engine was 250cc four stroke. Smaller single cylinder version was 2 stroke. I seem to remember they had an extra foot pedal to select neutral....

As noted, there are some clever folks out there. Chaincase looks an amalgam of Front Plunger, rear S/A. Maybe wet sump conversion, or a central oil tank. Genuine BSA Dripper heritage maintained.

Good engines, apparently.
I read somewhere many years back that those engines (BSA Sunbeam etc) were actually detuned for use in those ungainly styleless scooter things that BSA intended them for.
By the time BSA released them on to the market the scooter craze was in decline anyway.
Seems like special builders have utilized them a lot over the years in Bantam etc frames.

I understand that in there true original spec which inc a special coated barrel to stop seizures due to heat in the enclosed fairings they were really good however come production and spec downgraded to normal barrel and the end result was warranty claims everywhere ,very few saw the warranty mileage expire before  the owners wallets gave way first ! and again I do remember them being used in bikes more successfully . When they ran even as a scooter they could be fast.
