If someone came to me with a design like that, Id ask if they'd tried a different vocation.

apart from christine my naughty van i stopped working on peoples car engines that were made after the mid 1990's because they all became a pain in the backside. i realised with working on christine modern cars have a shelf life like most things nowadays and are not really designed to repair easily, so off to the scrappy they go and buy another. it keeps the money going round....

The BMW diagnostics software for my 2000 2.8L beemer is readily available on the net so I do look after it myself, its got 24 valves and variable valve timing ex and inlet so a bit complex. Its at the limit of what I will look after but I thought I should “upskill” myself.

The achilles heel of older cars like this is the black boxes which are numerous and oem replacements ridiculously expensive, used ecu’s etc require complex re-programming to swap over VIN details, way beyond most people but bmw forums can help gifted amateurs to do it.

Even skilled bmw mechanics find it hard to look after older cars like mine, the oem diagnostic software was designed for windows XP and BMW are not about to update it, so the mechanics have to dig out an old laptop to do the full diagnostics, it gets expensive quickly if they start swapping out black boxes to find a fault, so as you say down the scrappie it goes, or it gets sold for bugger all to someone who can fix it.

That is the reason I run around in a 1996 Nissan D21 ute with TD27 diesel, cheap to buy, cheap to fix a lot of stuff on them and they made heaps of them so parts are still easy to get and no electronic wankery on them

My neice had the windcreen go on her new Toyoto. New one was fitted by one of the national fitters but she had to wait for an appointment at a main Toyoto dealer to have it 'reprogrammed'. It's gone ridiculous. Bring back a SU carb and a set of points. Then most problems can be fixed on the road with a pair of pliers and a roll of insulation tape. 😊

and you have to be careful windscreen insurance covers things like the integral heated elements, rain detection etc, and associated electronics, not all policies will.

I have a 96 landrover discovery 1 with no engine electronics, no way i would upgrade it to a later version especially a “3” or “4” see https://youtu.be/ye7zfZ-rAGQ

KiwiGF it's good job you don't live in London with the daily day light robbery if you drive an old car, but it's ok for 50 planes a minute to land and take off, just keep taxing the plebs and preaching" WE are SAVING the planet " *problem* *bash* *pull hair out*

Yep I woz just in the uk for 7 weeks and bought/sold a 2005 1.3 yaris, which I made sure was “ULEZ” compliant. There are so many ways to get nicked (or charged) whilst driving a car in the uk ……I still got bugger all money for the yaris (I guess its too old), and the new owner will be selling it soon in sep before he returns to nz, presumably for bugger all again!

Fwiw the yaris gave me a bit of grief but I managed to fix it, worst issue woz a faulty starter relay which by going wrong cooked the starter motor but at least it was not the black box (ecu) powering the relay. Still took hours to diagnose it.

That didn't actually cross my mind Bergs, but now you mention it, the hypocrisy is staggering. :o  I never visit London, and never will if it's not a matter of life or death.  To me, it's the biggest s**t hole in the country (overpriced, overpopulated, overrated, etc).  Apart from the people, I'd have no issues with it disappearing into the sea as the ice caps melt due to pollution from all those planes. *rant*
