My son reckons with the luck I get I must have been a terrible person in a previous life. Dunno - can't remember, but he's spot on regarding luck.
As mentioned elsewhere, my lathe has been misbehaving and am currently in the midst of changing bearings. I suspect there's also a problem with the StarDelta, and that's all mechanical and a pig to get to without moving the lathe. Only weighs 3 tons ....
So Thursday thought I'd take a break and use the Jag to go to the shooting range. Only gone half a mile and it started misbehaving (seemed to be very lean and spitting back, although if pressed would be fine near max revs). It's always a bit like that for a while when the auto choke comes off, but this was far worse - undriveable in fact - so I turned back and took the daily driver - an old Focus 1.6 petrol.
Halfway on the way home this decided to peter out whilst in heavy traffic. Hazards on, traffic backing up behind me but after a couple of attempts it started again and I was able to get home. I suspected fuel starvation and so tried holding it against the rev limiter in 2nd gear a few times. Ha! Would only get to 5,000 and then slowly decline. So yesterday (Friday) decided to change the fuel filter. A right pig of a job, as it's tucked up in a channel with no means of releasing those funny clips that engage pipes to filter. Job done and road test - still the same, so today I'll take the fuel pump off - well, actually, out as its inside the fuel tank (and I need to cut a hole in the rear seat area to access it).
Dunno about karma, I seem to have caught Berger's bug. Reminds me of that song by the Everly Bros: 'problems, problems, problems all day long' .... *problem* *problem* *problem*

RD,
Have you thought about replacing your star delta starter with a variable speed drive. Star delta seems a strange setup to have on a lathe any how. What's wrong with DOL.
Cheers

Purpose of a star delta is to reduce the voltage required to start a 3 phase motor. Anything over around 3hp is usually so equipped. Nothing to do with speed control.  Modern versions of them are compact, apparently solid state, whereas mine is entirely mechanical with solenoids, relays etc. I'm presuming something's gone out of adjustment, as it doesn't appear to be switching over to delta. Had a similar issue years ago but, as stated, the large cast iron box containing the mechanism is a bit complicated (there's a 2nd SD switching in there for the suds pump) and also access is limited due to it being mounted on the back of the lathe - which is against the wall.
