Four Candles or Fork Andles

I was visiting a friend when I discovered the most amazing hardware store. They actually sell single items! I don't know about other countries but shops like this are as rare as hens teeth in the UK.

GB in chesterfield there was Britts that supplied and stocked loads of hardware, Johnsons handymans at brampton that closed a few years ago and you could get most things even dating back pre war as in well made stuff. Kirby electrical had stock going back to the early 1900's , all gone and now flooded with big stores stocked with scrap made in china ..

The big DIY stores sell packs of screws etc. If you want an odd number you have to buy more than you need and then loose the extras in your shed.

It is modern retail economic management
You make sure that any single sale cover the cost of making the sale
Thus bolts in packs of 25 .
It was how Woolworths trashed Dick Smith
It makes sence to an accountant but not to an electronics hobbist when you have to by a pack of 10 identical resistors
Thus to do a simple $ 2 repair it costs $ 20 and you end up with 19 resistors that you can never use
Or to make a simpe control circuit it ends up costing $ 300 so you go the an industrial electronics supplier & buy a premade one for $ 40
Prior to the Woolworth take over Dick Smith was running at a massive profit and after 12 years of "proper economic management " it was loosing money hand over fist .
