Or, better still, a Machinery Handbook. A new one will cost a few ££ but second hand ones are relatively cheap (around a tenner). Doesn't matter if it's '46 or '96 - the basics are the same. As my mate George used to say, if it ain't in there, it ain't engineering. He gave me my first one, the second I gave to my son at uni when it became apparent his tutors couldn't even drill a hole.

Contacted seller for a possible refund/replacement - these are the photos I sent him.  I guess if he doesn't want it back, he could refund the £20 and leave me with the issue of repair.  Looking closely at the pics, it would seem that the thread is contained in inserts into the cast iron.  If so, does this help me out with options that are not too expensive?

worty the witness mark is the shiny bit that you are going to punch out  { with 28lb hammer and pit fitters drift } after putting the casting in her indoors oven on gas mk 8 on the top shelf while the chicken sits on the bottom shelf burning it's bum.  *bash* *bash* *whistle* or you could bring it to MWAS and i am sure he would tell you where to stuff it,  *lol* *lol* or maybe take it back to who let you have it and tell them in no uncertain terms you need another one then go to the pub *beer* *beer*

Ahhh, gotcha, thought it may be a shrink fit insert thingy.  Wouldn't dare take it to MWAS, can just see him shaking his head and thinking it's another Worty thing that's never going to go right*pull hair out* *pull hair out*  I've been in touch with the seller and sent the pictures so, he can either refund me and pay for return postage or refund and let me keep it.  If the latter, may make it worth it to rethread then I've got a sound hub?? *bright idea*  Or, I could just dump it in the bin?

Now where's that beer? *beer* *beer* *beer*

worty it is not a small job to do , talking the job is the easy part. if it is to be made into an item to use it needs setting up perfectly and re threading the next size up metric or imperial and a new pin made out of suitable material , and don't forget the stresses it has to tolerate when braking , you can see what it has done in the photos . it sounds easy but time consuming so maybe it is better off in the scrap yard , you will have the bin police after you if it ends up in the bin  *wave* *problem* ::hh:: *beer*

There is a dedicated repair kit for these calipers that use a splined rivet nut which is the correct size, but it's expensive for my purposes.  I've been offered a partial refund or return for full refund by the vendor, so will consider both.  Interestingly though Bergs, the pin only screws into the hub by about 10mm, often on worn threads, which are only M9x1.25 - doesn't seem much for the stress it's put under *dunno* *dunno* *dunno*

worty the original design is enough when it's bolted up  but opening out that cast bit to re thread will weaken that part, accident insurance folks would have a field day if it ever came to that. is it worth the hassle  *doubt*

Fair point mate, but I suppose that could apply to any repairs.  I know that there are repair kits especially for this issue, so it must be a recognised fix.  Having said that, I'll angle for a refund - I can get free postage back via Evilbay.

Cheers. *beer* *beer* *beer* *beer*
