A10 1951 GF mudguards & toolbox wanted
« on: 11.01. 2007 05:38 »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of where I can get my hands on both front and rear mudguards and toolbox from?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have been told that the toolbox and front wont be too bad to source, but that I will have troubles locating a rear guard.  Pictures coming soon :-) Ian

Hi all,

Regarding the mudguards i am after, I have been told here in Oz, that a M20 set would do, the holes are in the wrong place but they could be patched and new holes drilled.  Any comments?
Regards Ian

Ian, I think M20 guards may be wrong shape, especially the front. Are they any easier to find? Swinging-arm guards are being remanufactured in Asia and the front one is similar in shape to Plunger type but would not suit a discerning restorer. A few years back parts for these bikes were in abundance at every swap meet in Australia, probably because they were NSW Police bikes in '51.

Hi, I'm in OZ in QLD. I think I know where you got your bike. I rang Pioneer just after you got it. You can get toolbox from ebay in UK i think there is one at the moment. Front and rear guards also come up from time 2 time but be patient. I have heaps of M20 stuff the guards are different. There is a universal guard that will fit on rear cause I have one on my A10 but you need the deep type front like the one in the forum pic. The front really should have deep gaurd with rib but beggars cant be choosers as they say. I have parts lists for a10 my email is terrykennedy11@bigpond.com.au contact me off the forum and we can talk on phone. all the best Terry

I had another think and had a look at my m20 stuff. An m20 rear guard would fit but you would have to cut the fin thing that bolts to the back of battery carrier off the guard. A plunger deep sided type front guard from m20/21 or b33/31 etc would fit on a10. I was thinking of army m20 guards before. There is a toolbox for b31 plunger on OZ ebay with no lid, it would be ok. Lids come up from time to time and if you get it cheap its worth getting cause you might be able to make a lid or get one made. Terry

I don't think it is the correct mudguard in any case.  Check the picture on the home page and the correct guard should have a hinged rear section.  I believe that this is typical of all heavyweight plunger BSA rear guards.

Thanks Guys, I really do appreciate you all keeping a look for me, i really do.  unfortunately, although it would fit, it is not the right one, I will eventually have to accept such a guard however, I really do want one with the hinge like the original.  Thanks again, Ian and please keep looking :-)

Hi Jeff,

I'm looking at the BSA Twin Restoration book and there is a clear photograph of a 1947 A7 with a hinged rear guard on page 11.

On page 148 it describes the rear mudguards for the A7 and A10 models and the changes that were made to them.  It states that the first (1947) A7 had a rear mudguard with the tail able to hinge up.  In 1949, this was joined by another, still with a hinge, for the plunger framed models.  The rigid mudguard went in 1951  and the plunger type changed in 1953 when a boxed in number plate was fitted but the hinge was retained.  They continued in this form up to 1957 when the plunger model was discontinued.

So, Jeff, I reckon we have to treat the restoration book as "Gospel" which means that neither of your fenders were originally for your bike.  Have you tried fitting either of these to the bike yet, together with the support stays?  If so, are they a good fit and do they look right?  If the answer to both of these questions is "Yes", I wouldn't worry about it too much.  If the answer is "Yes" and you want the bike to be authentic, you could always cut one of them and fit a hinge!!

The A10 picture on the home page is a good guide.

Good luck with the restoration.

Hi Brissy_bsa,
If you are happy to have reproduction guards and toolbox I may be able to help.
I live in Traralgon, Victoria which is 2 hours East Of Melbourne. I am just starting to restore my 1951 A10 GF Plunger which is complete and in excellent condition so have all the original tin ware.  The chap who I bought my bike from manufactures tin ware such as tool boxes, chain guards etc and there also another guy who specialises in making mudguards.  Both live in my area and perhaps they could use my tool box and guards as templates to make reproductions. I have no idea of the costs but can assure you the quality of their work is excellent.  If you are interested drop me an email: rkellow@bigpond.net.au and we can take it from there.
