KEEP AWAY from vauxhall combo 1.3 diesel vans , i managed to get the plastic clip out today after 4 days of aggro. now i find i have to remove the throttle pedal and brake pedal to get at the servo nuts and 5 nuts that hold a big plate on that has to come off to get the clutch master cylinder out and it is a struggle never known to mankind. this plate is also stuck with mastic goo, you need octopus arms small universal joints and loads of very LOUD swearing to help with this nightmare of a job, MR haynes says undo two nuts on a steel cross bar and remove the bar then CUT the trim to get to the steering column power assist unit to remove that. the problem is the cross bar is also WELDED to either end. the designers of this need hanging the amount of work you have to do to change a slave and master cylinder is unreal. the pic shows the clip that broke and my butchering of the steel box it fits in and yes i turned the steel rod to get the flats in position on it to give the clip ease of removal , the left hand of the clip that you can't really see was still stuck in its slot with the plastic tang . NEVER AGAIN!! *pull hair out* *pull hair out* *problem* *help*

30 years ago, I took a g/f's Metro to have an oil leak fixed (drive shaft to gearbox).  I asked how much, and the reply was £300.  Whoa, I said, what parts do you have to replace.  He said, 'It's not the parts, they're £3.50, but to get to them is a bugga'.

I often see people quoted for what seems like routine jobs, and they are astronomical.  Clutches at 3k, electrical problems £1500, etc, etc.  There is no thought on repair other than giving an excuse for a ton of work and huge bills at a garage.

Don't know if you got a garage quote for the work Bergs, but I'll bet you'd need some B&Ts afterwards to calm your nerves.

The only thing I can think of is that you're not supposed to repair the issue, but buy another gearbox??

Sympathies with you mate - sounds like a b*****d of a job.

Bergs, just a thought, It'd be shame if the van had an accident, like spontaneously caught fire 🤔

Bsareg i have been told about the removal of the body on discos. i have also been told about the cutting of trim in some modern cars to access removal of parts to get a job done, NEVER rate but as we know they aren't designed to repair they are designed with a shelf life, but they keep telling us they want to save the planet. what a load of bull it is a case of keep the money going round and round *lol*

G'day Fellas.
Modern (and some not so modern) bikes need a lot of man hours just to do simple jobs. It takes me over an hour just to check the valve shims on the 83 rHonda, seat and tank off to do the plugs. On the 78 XT500 I had to drop the motor (about 3 hours) to take the cam cover off *ex* To change the rear belt on the 88 HD the swingarm needs to come off  *ex* We often forget how easy it is to work on our A's.

Here u go, why not to own a disco 3 or 4……( I have a disco 1 diesel, but won’t upgrade it 😏)

In my youth we would be incredulous if a clutch could not be removed with the engine in situ.

Thinking about it Bergs, I'm surprise you can even buy the slave cylinder as a replaceable part.  As is so often these days, a whole unit is replaced rather than the constituent parts.

As GB says, mention to a couple of yobs in the neighbourhood that there's an abandoned van that's prime to be torched. *eek* *eek* *eek*
