Biggest problem with all cars having running lights is that you really need to have your headlight on on your bike are you really are invisible. Car drivers only look for nice bright lights. An old dark coloured bike just doesn't register.

G'day Fellas.
I never ride in the day with lights on. Very rarely ride at night. The 51 plunger didn't need a brake light as it was an optional extra. I put one on for my own safety! The road rules here state a motorcycle must have at least parking lights on all the time. Bugger that!
Cheers
Oh the 83 rHonda does but the 88 HD doesn't !

During the day, I find a mean look, aggressive road position and loud bike does the trick better than lights. *razz* *angry* >:D

Presumably that's not retrospective? I mean, can you still get calcium carbide?
One of my tractors has no mirror, no horn and no lights. But it's completely road legal 'cause it was made that way. Same as bikes - if not used at night, no lights required (but I put a brake light on my DOT). Basically it means that lights - if fitted - must work.  *smile*

What pisses me off most is drivers leaving the rear fog light on either when no fog or in traffic *angry*
Or in rain! That's illegal.

The (slight) irony with those drivers, GB, is that if they are thick enough to put fog lights on in the rain, they're also too dense to figure out why you're madly flashing your foggies on and off when you overtake. *angry* *angry*  A bit like the numpties who don't turn their lights on at night and look at you all aggrieved/indignant when you flash your lights at them. *angry* *angry* *angry*  Makes me wonder if they ever consider why they can't see anything on the dash. *dunno* *dunno*  Could just see the copper stopping them and asking why they were speeding with no lights - 'Oh, yeah, I couldn't see the speedo officer', as he's half way through writing the ticket for crass stupidity. *razz* *whistle* *contract* *fight*

There is a simple solution
Buy an old car and ignore all of the modern rubbish
just been down to SWMBO's place in my 32 year old L300 ( now on historic plates ) a round trip of 2700km .
No power steering so the ton & a half of firewood gave my arm muscles a better work out than any gym.
No air con so did not burn a drop of extra fuel but passed better than 40 dead modern cars on the side of the road on the way home , most with bonnets up & steam issuing from the overloaded cooling system.
Our bodies thermoregulate quite well if you dress in a mannar that allows them to do it , loose fitting shirt & trousers .
There is a good reason why Arabs wear towel on their heads & bed sheets over their bodies.
Latter this year the second L 300 goes on plates and next year the 1975 Bently will hopefully be ready for rego.

I don't know what pencil dick decided that auto engine shut off was a good anti pollution idea.
They obviously failed basic science at high school  because every time the engine starts you blow a little oil out the exhaust and of course run rich let alone the unburned fuel that is pumped out before the cylinder actually fires, then of course the engine has to burn even more fuel to compensate for the electrical energy that was used to start the engine + run the air con ( and any other electric device that was running when you stopped ) and as the generator is not particularly fuel efficient you burn nearly 20 times the fuel energy to replace the electrical energy thus increase the total pollution the vehicle is emitting .
I always remember the courier days when we got into the high 30's or above.
Like Berger I unzipped the jacket at the sleeves & front .
The traffic would become very heavy as all of the clots who did not have air con at home were driving around in their cars with the air con on ( most were black ) .
Thus when the lights changed only 2 to 4 cars could struggle across the intersections per change.
And if you looked inside most of the occupants were wearing a tight fitting T-shirt
And we think we are the smartest animal on the planet .
