catz you need to take the rods off and take the other plug out then the bolt in the flywheel that holds the tube and pull it out. doing it as is will let crud go into the big ends. then when all cleaned out put the rods on the same as they came off

G'day Catz.
As bergs said it needs cleaning out properly.
Are you going to do the whole job whilst your in there? Big ends, mains etc.
Cheers

Hello there musky,
i'm thinking along those lines. I've come this far now, which is way further than i anticipated, so then i know it's been done.
When i went to my old mate who did some of the paintwork and saw his three Beezers he said that they are a money pit, i know what he meant now.  *eek* *rant*

Got the booger out, what a PITA that was, and looking at the big end bearings i would say that they are good with no wear. Maybe the crankshaft end bush should be replaced though that looks good too.

Check with micrometer. Make sure there is no lip on the timing side bush and check for up and down wear and tapering.

Here's some pictures and measurements of what i've found. Hope it's right.
The first two measurements are of the right and left crankshaft to conrod journals, the third and fourth measurements are the size of the conrod shell bearings and the fifth is the taper on the crankshaft right hand end.
The conrod shells have "STD" stamped on both. There was no up and down play on the conrods when in situ. I hope that i can re-use this lot but maybe replace the right hand bush. What do the experts reckon?

the measurements on the big ends need to show three figures after the decimal point. As you're only 'down the road', if you want to bring it to my workshop I'll measure it up for you f.o.c.

Thanks.  I just rounded the figures up. How does 1.684 and 1.685 sound?
When would be the best time to come over to you? I thought you were shutting up shop until 8th Jan. I could do with buying some things off you too.

Ignore the 8th January thing! Just give me a ring anytime apart from Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Ta

A big thank you to Andrew at Priory Magnetos who i went to see yesterday. He measured the journals on my A10  crankshaft, both conrod journals were good, and a slight lip on the timing side bush journal, which he recommended trueing up and a new bush which he had in stock, and so now just need to get it fitted and reamed to the correct size.
Also had everything in stock that i need to finish my rebuild which i'll be starting on after the festive period and can't wait.
Thanks again to everyone who has offered their invaluable advice on this thread. All the best. *respect*
