Good morning - suzuki clutch conversion
« on: 21.11. 2022 22:27 »
Good morning all and just like to say thank you for allowing me to join the forum .
I'm in Perth Western Australia and own a b33 plunger and a wm20 .The B33 is a running unit and close for rego the wm20 is still a work in progress but not to far away .
Would anyone be able to put me in contact with someone in australia preferably WA that may have experience in the suzuki clutch conversion .I have a lathe and milling machine etc and am interested in machining one of the units up .I have read some info on some threads here and have a fair understanding of what's to be done however not in detail and would like more detail on building a clutch up .Have a good day

G'day Clanger  *welcome*
We have a few "sandgroper" members. Orabanda would probably know.
We have a section for other BSA's but as your B33 shares a lot of components with our A's you will find answers in their respective sections.
What years are your B33 and WM20  *????*

G'day Muskrat and Wozza

The B33 is a 1950 the WM20 is a 1940 .

Wozza I see Orabanas name mentioned quite a lot id like to get in touch with him and pick his brains .I do have lathe ,mill indexing head etc so can machine the required bits up but a few details and hints to go about it in right order would be handy .I'm only a newly on here so can't send PM'S yet unfortunatly .The reason I discovered the suzi clutch is my brother also has a b33 same as mine and his has been fitted with the clutch by someone here in WA guessing Orabanda most likely but my brother does does not have details as he purchased the bike like it .

Is the clutch worth converting ? From what I've read its quite smooth and helps with gear change and selecting nutuaral a quite a lot .would this be a fair call

The BSA 4 spring clutch is pretty good but the best is the 6 spring on the plunger twins. Light and effective. Everything a clutch should be. I'm fairly reluctant to move from standard as it can make repairs and maintenance a bit tricky a few years down the line.

I converted my ‘56 GF and ‘49 B31 to Bob Newby belt drive, both had excellent 6 spring clutches easy to find neutral, light in operation etc, the key being to use a dial gauge in a particular way to get the pressure plate to lift evenly, and to not over tension springs (trial and error).

The main reason to do the conversion was to solve oil leaks 🤬, the secondary reason was ease of doing maintenance (no need to spend hours cleaning off gasket faces, making new gaskets etc, and no more checking and topping up oil in the case on long runs).

I see Orabana has read this thread & I suspect he'll get in touch with you to give you some tips..
YES it was a very worthwhile conversion to replace the crap 6 spring my '57 swing arm,
but as mentioned the plunger type 6 spring is a excellent unit..
I've never had trouble finding neutral on either bike with the Suzuki or plunger 6 spring clutch both types work well..

Hi Clanger,
I adapted a Suzuki GS450 clutch to a B31; worked a treat.
Pics below; since they were taken I have removed one fibre plate from the basket, and fitted lighter springs.
I also removed the SRM nut from the cush drive and re-fitted the standard nut.
If you need any further info Musky can provide my  phone and email no.
Hi Wozza, you've had the clutch fitted a long time now; really pleased that you are enjoying it.
BTW; are your alloy FWH brakes any good? Mine are a non event; the only brakes I haven't been able to get to work.
Cheers
Richard

MUSKY    they came in the box of bits & pieces I got when I bought the bike years ago...
I thought you told me their racing brakes? Then I was questioned by Richard & did a search on Google..
They came up on Brit Bike Forum too...

Just wondered why you removed the SRM cush drive nut >

Hi Roger,
Did up the outer primary cover, and couldn't turn the engine over!
It is a tad too long; the 1" hex was contacting the inside of the domed part of the cover.
Cheers,
Richard

Thanks Richard - that explains it - I've got them on my SR clutch and cushdrive and think they're a great idea.
