Inner Gearbox Cover

Can anyone please help me to identify the correct part number for the inner gearbox cover for my 1960 Swing arm A7 Shooting Star? I am pretty sure that it is either 67-3017 OR 67-3018, but I am not sure which and having studied the photos of both,  I cannot see any difference between them. The more I read on the subject, the more confused I seem to be getting!

G'day Mosin.
My book says 42-3247 1960 to 1962 all s/a.
67-3017 is for the plunger 67-3344 is pre 1960 s/a.
I think the difference is the clutch cable mount. Early ones were threaded, later were plain for a ferrel cable fitting.

Plunger and swinging arm inner covers are different shapes and do not interchange.

The swinging arm inners have casting mark 67 3345 on the back.

First photo shows the 1960 type with plain hole for clutch cable and second shows the pre 1960 type with slot and threaded hole.

Hi Julian, I have studied your two photos and as far as I can see both are marked with exactly the same part number (67 3345).

And neither shows the number 67 3344 mentioned by Muskrat.

Surely there must be a simple answer somewhere?  *conf*

Those are casting numbers. Where the difference is in the machining or attachments.
Casting numbers are usually one or two different to the part number.

Mosin - same basic casting used for all the swinging arm inner covers all years. You will not find one with 67 3344 0r 42 3247 cast in.

On my photos above the first is 42 3247 and the second 67 3344.

Even the needle roller inner covers used the same basic casting 67 3445.

Following on from this, I have now sourced the correct part and am in the process of reassembling it. Now I know that when I fit the inner cover it is crucial that I line up the two red dots on the selector and housing. However what isn't clear is which gear I should have the bike in when I do this? The Haynes Manual hints that the bike should be in neutral without saying it explicitly. But elsewhere on the web I have read that the bike should be in second when the inner cover is fitted and the dots lined up. Please can anyone clarify?

 Service Sheet 311 tells all. Neutral on the camplate is the smallest notch. Take care to align the selector fork shaft with its locating hole in the inner cover. Smacking the cover into place hoping for the best stands a chance of pushing against the end of the rod and breaking away the rod grubscrew along with a bit of the main shell. Inner Cover should slide on easily when everything is lined up.
