Gotta wonder how he managed to get a photo with no oil beneath the bike. Has it been drained?

I bought the one BSA in existence that doesn't leak. Just kidding, it's got fresh oil all around and new gaskets. If you look under it you can see small drips forming. They just haven't hit the ground yet.

  Don't get paranoid, checking out the bike's previous history could reveal all is in order...or not. Better to ride sensibly for now, it's when they are thrashed, along with a high detergent oil, that sludge breaks away to block oilways. But yes, in any major teardown the crank plugs need to come out and that central oilway cleared thro'

 Search Great Mechanical Disasters on the Forum for fine examples of what goes wrong in a big way, plus a few good laughs. If any of you folks have anything of a like nature to add, go ahead, we all need a good cheering up.

 *welcome* great bike you have ..to get the front fender/ mudguard to follow the tyre contour on mine i chopped about 4inch off the back and slid it backwards then drilled it. pity yours is already fixed *bash*

My next question is what is the size/thread of bolts to attach the lower portion of the sidestand to the upper portion?

Hi again,

The bolts for the bracket to frame are 5/16 cycle thread (26 tpi) and 1 1/8" long with a reduced head diameter, they have a lockwasher and nut behind as well.

Part number 42-4767 x 2. 

The pivot bolt is 7/16 cycle thread (20 tpi) and 1 5/16" long with a thin head.

Part number 42-4793 x 1.

P.S. The diagram is a late model but I don't think they changed.

First let me say you have a very nice looking BSA. Then we can address the brakes. Your bike has the second worst brake available on a BSA. The first be the all aluminum Ariel type. Before you give up take a look at what is inside. The lever position is saying that the linings are probably worn. Also you can see if there is any oil or grease on the lining. I would replace the linings and have the shoes arced by a professional. As an alternative you can install new linings and arc them yourself be fitting sandpaper ( glued) to the inside of the drum then turn the wheel to remove the lining imperfections. If you do this last step be sure to wear a mask and do not blow out the debris using air unless you are outside. Of course remove any left over glue in the drum
