different end plates

just a question about the two end plates, one has bits cut out that i know are for accepting the reinforced  drive tangs. the other doesn't have these cut outs. did BSA use a middle that hadn't got the reinforced bits? i do know the pattern part middles that self destruct don't have the strengthening pieces. who has the answer, i haven't got a clue. as usual.

The A10 6-spring clutch doesn't normally have the strengthening tangs if I remember correctly.

I think that the late clutches were like this. Along with a band around the basket.

They beefed the clutch up either for the later bikes with higher BHP or bikes intended for sidecar use. My Super Rocket has the reinforced clutch with the cutouts in the cover plate. From its tractor pull gearing when I got it I imagine it had been a chair pulling machine in its previous life. Interestingly there is no option mentioned in the parts book for my 1958 machine and the clutch shown doesn't have any reinforcement. I know people moan about the six spring clutch and swap it for the later three and four spring models if not the Newby version but having worked quite hard on mine replacing the posts and the centre it is now a very satisfactory unit.

slymo i had the beefed up clutch in my cafe A7 after i bought the reinforced bit from a bsa dealer in nottingham [ GAGGS ] my bike used to destroy those middles without the reinforced bits, it was a different clutch with that reinforced part in it.  i did find it worked well but needed a steam powered left hand when set up to get neutral and no slip. at least now when i come to selling it i can say SPECIAL BSA BEEFED UP CLUTCH
