Insurance sting!
« on: 01.07. 2022 11:20 »
Many of us have modern bikes. I suppose when you change your bike you can expect your insurance company to use the opportunity to make a bit of easy money. So how much would you expect Carole Nash to take off me to change from a BMW R1200R (2016) to a Kawasaki Z900RS (2022), bearing in mind the latter is slightly less powerful and cheaper to fix? £30?, £40? £50 even?! Nope, £140 aaaagh!! Can you blame me for feeling ripped off? This is not for the premium, I'd already paid that a couple of months ago, this is just the charge to change my bike. And, while I'm having a rant, the premium had gone up by about £80 as well. Defo 'No' to Carole next year.

Something's wrong here. I've just taken out a CN policy on my car (I already have one for the bikes) and the T&C's state a £35 charge to change a vehicle on the policy. It was always £40 for bikes, so whether that's gone down I have no idea.
Clearly there has been a charge made for the newer bike in addition to the charge for the change. How could they have charged you the correct premium for the newer bike a couple of months back before you even told them?

Been with Carole Nash for several years and found them competitive until renewal this month, Classic Bike policy went up almost double, so shopped about and now paying pretty much as last year

ever since Carole Nash sold out they have tried to put my premium up a lot every year, that is until i phone them and have a barney with them. this has resulted in getting a  couple of pounds off from the previous years charge. they just try it on until you have a go at them. they say things like " we have found another policy with the same benefits for you and it's a bit cheaper than last year will that alright " OF COURSE IT WILL, why didn't you give me that in the first place. well we know why don't we. so many people just pay up without a fight *fight*

According to the telesales person at Carole Nash I paid £30 to Carole Nash and £111 to the underwriters so maybe carole nash are saying it costs £30 (to them) but are failing to tell us about the other £111 to the underwriter.... sharp practice I'd say. The £80 increase in premium was for the BMW against last year's price.

I am across the pond in Canada the insurance for 1 yr full comp on my Harley electraglide classic was $1300.00 and we get 6 or 7 month decent riding weather if we are lucky .....many insurance companies wont take bikes over 25 years old and so far have been unable to find vintage insurance for my super rocket I have found a few companies that will give liability insurance only at full rate based on a 650 cc .

Insurance premiums are done on historical claims basis
Insurace companies pool their claims data and models thhat have a lot more claims or have a significantly higher repair cost get bigger premiums

So a very common , small Hp bike ridden by younger crash prone riders ends up with higher premiums than a super bike ridden by enthusiasts that has never had a claim.

Simple solution, ride you BSA more .
Down here I can get full comprehensive insurance for 10 BSA's on historic rego for the same price as a modern Triump Sprint or 7 BSA's for the cost of a modern Bonnie

Yes but the £140 was just to change my bike, nothing to do with the initial premium.

So you reckon they've charged you a hundred quid more than they charge anyone else just to change a bike on the policy? Sounds like you need to phone them.

I had a discussion and the telesales guy who was adamant that it was £111 to the underwriters and £30 to CN, so yes, £141 in total just to change my bike! It may be worth phoning to make sure there hasn't been a mistake but I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be.
