A10 gearbox repair

Hi, i'm looking for some advice. I've got a gearbox for my A10 i'm putting together, tho I dont even know where the g/box came from so the condition is unknown.... it may have just been given to me years ago but it looks like it's had a hard life judging by the looks of it plus I can see what looks like a small crack in the casing. It does go thru the gears and everything is turning & lubed inside tho the teeth on one of the gears looks a bit iffy.  Does anyone have names or contacts of someone totally trustworthy (UK) I could send it to to either have it looked at and checked over please.

Fortunately, your career in Neurosurgery allows you the luxury of sending it off to SRM. Or, this might be a nice time of year to visit Aberystwyth, anyway.

This was BC, (Before Covid) so may be out of date.

As mentioned elswhere I have just had great service from Richard Clamp who overhauled my gearbox within twenty four hours of me taking it to him. Richard is at 20, Green Lane, Grendon, Athersone, Coventry, CV9 2PL. His email address is cazo57@hotmail.co.uk. His landline number is 01827 737220.

SRM send there gearboxes out of the shop. They may say where they send it?

That's what the fella said when i went to collect my bits. He was the shop tech wizard rather than oily hand type. Strange thing to say if not true. If they know a good guy on gearboxes then good economics to farm it out and charge for post and commission.

That's interesting. So far, though a complete amatuer, I've done my own, and of those two, one works great and the other is yet to be tested.

  Paul....Compared to earlier BSA designs, this four speed box is almost too simple, and the straightforward service sheets 310 and 311 detail the stripping and reassembly. The external, almost hidden grub screw on the selector fork shaft is sometimes troublesome to undo, but with this  screw removed and the shaft pushed into the box and slid out, the whole of the internals (except the final drive sleeve, bearing, sprocket and oilseal) can be removed with a bit of gynaecological manipulation.

 Once apart the condition can be assessed and the job entrusted to the professionals if necessary. Both the earlier Plunger box and S/A type can be stripped almost to the basic shell plus the final drive as outlined above with the box still in the frame.

 If refurbishing a box, leave that grubscrew off until the inner case and rod are finally in position.  With the grubscrew tightened against the rod, knocking the inner case back on with the  selector shaft misaligned or tight in its hole will break off a piece of the shell casting.

 Faults...Look for worn ball races, worn and scored shafts and plain bushes. Layshaft blind bush always suffers. Gear teeth and drive dogs do wear, but most boxes can be brought back from the dead, the bushes, bearings etc are widely available. Camplates wear in the selector tracks but are fairly cheap to replace.

Thanks Swarfy, lots of really good info there and i appreciate your time explaining everything, cheers.

The main reason I'd like someone to check it over is that I'm up to my eyeballs in restoring cars and bikes and trying to get things done before I get called from Addenbrookes as I'm on the kidney transplant list, so getting everything finished as soon as possible is now a very important priority.

Ordinarily I'd pile in and have a look myself ..saying that I may have a look if i gat caught up with the other stuff lol.
