G'day Fellas.
Today I got the XT500 registered. Naturally I had to take her for a blast up Main St. Speedo doesn't work but that's never worried me  *smile*
Might ride to work tomorrow, or should I call in sick and ride all day?

G'day GB.
Wish I could. Both my boss's (father & son) are away today & tomorrow racing their cars at Eastern Creek. Dad drives a 1968 Ford XTGT and son has ex Nascar. So I'm the boss.

I will investigate why the speedo isn't working, it spun up nice with a drill. Went to plug in the tacho cable into the cam cover only to find there's no guts for it. Ordered those parts from CMSNL
Early XT's have a weird electrical system. The head/tail/brake lights run 6V AC off the magneto. The rest is to run off a reg/rec through a 6V battery. As there were no electrics other than the AC side I improvised to get blinkers & horn. Mounted a small 12V battery & blinkers as a stand alone, total loss system. What I was surprised about is that both systems can run the frame as the earth! That's why I call it ELECTRICKERY.

My 82 XT550 and 01 KTM EXC 400. Love the old thumpers! The XT is sitting on IT 490 suspension!

I'm happy to be corrected but I understand that national power grids use the ground as a return path. This means that high voltage power lines are all outgoing. During training when I worked for BT we were warned about higher potential voltage in the ground near transformer sub-stations. I can't remember how Neutral is dealt with; I guess it's part of the step-down transformer circuit.

Reminded me of my xt from long ago, great engine, great ride, great looks  ...but often a pain (a danger!) to start\kick + a way too small range (small tank) + imo dangerously underdimensioned front brake (& heat fading on top).

Neutral is (effectively) locally connected to earth on most systems, but the further away that connection is, the higher the voltage might be in the neutral wire. BUT you can never trust a neutral wire to not be carrying dangerous voltage.......relative to earth.

PS all you riders of old dirt/enduro type bikes need to sell em and get a B44 or B50 🤣

I'd love a Victor or a CCM but I can't "do it in the dirt" like I used to!
The boss at work said he has a 21" front wheel that I can have so now I'm on the hunt for a rear. I'll put knobbies on those. That way I can have a real "duel purpose" bike.

a mate of mine lives inside a big wood and him and his mates go blasting about quite a lot. i am thinking of joining them even though i'm oldish. i've got my eye on a 70's yamahahaha DT125 just for this purpose but the price is steadily rising by the hour so i have set my limit at 550£££s. back int day i could buy one for 20 quid. i did put my kwaker knacker KH250 in the woods in 1980 with a knobberly on the back wheel, that was a very different experience but a laugh trying to follow proper wood bikes amongst the tight tracks with trees everywhere and 3 cylinders slung across it *problem*

well the yamahahaha i was looking at has made 700£s. these non runners or " it just needs a carb clean mate"  or " it just needs the brakes bleeding mate"  are getting expensive and could be a pain in the ass once you get them home *rant*, like URMA my yonda was. never mind pub friday *beer* *yeah*
