E5 and E10 petrol info
« on: 10.01. 2022 12:29 »
Some interesting info by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs here:-

https://fbhvc.co.uk/fuels

At least read the section in red type 'Further advice on ethanol with respect to fuel additives'.

The future of classic vehicles doesn't look too good. How long will it be before we can only get fuel >10% ethanol?

Do you know how Brazil dealt with using very high ethanol fuel since the 1970's? Did it kill off all the old vehicles?

“The future of classic vehicles doesn't look too good.”

I agree that it looks, potentially, more expensive. On Harry’s Garage (Youtube) he recently publicised so-called Storage Fuel, a zero ethanol minimum 99-octane option that, it seems, has come out of the vintage racing sector.

Available in 10 litre plastic containers or pallets of the same it’s presently priced (UK) in the region of £3 per litre inc VAT.

To use fuel supplied like that makes me think what it must have been like 100 plus years ago. Taking a horse and cart of empty cans to the local chemist to stock up? Nowadays, presumably, we’ll be loading the electric car or van with the same.

Where there’s a will (=money) there’s a way!

I've mentioned this on here before when discussing todays petrol with the usual comments about snake oil but according to the tests carried out by the FBHVC it seems it does help to prevent some problems.

Being a bit of a belt and braces person I add Lead Replacement and Marine Ethanol Treatment to a 20 ltr fuel can and fill it with BP Ultimate. I top my bike's tank up from the can and keep it full, especially in the cold winter months to prevent condensation forming on the exposed metal inside.

I've been doing this for a few years now. It takes a very small amount of each additive for 20 ltrs, so it cost very little and I feel I'm giving my A10 the best chance I can to stay reliable and trouble free.

Despite storing the petrol in a can during the winter months and in my bike's petrol tank, summer and winter, I’ve not had any fuel related problems.

But then to fair, I don't do any of those precautions, and I've had no trouble either.
Wonder if it's going to be the same damp squib that Unleaded was some years back?

Out on the Star Twin I filled up with Esso Synergy Supreme - E5 to the rest of us. It was an astonishing 177.9 a litre whilst the E10 is 144.9 a litre.
How can they justify an extra 33 p a litre?
Easy, people won't buy it, they'll say there is no demand and it will be quietly withdrawn from sale. Just you watch.

Hi Folks
Esso have said from September 2023 all Esso fuels will now contain Ethanol. I have been reliably informed that the Ethanol content will be 5%in E5 and 10% in E10 unleaded fuel. So if anybody knows where to buy non Ethanol fuel please let us all know.

Cheers

Always put E5 in mine, and it runs really well.  If E5 disappears, it'll be back to using additives to boost the octane.  Before the Berger build, I used E5 plus additive all the time, and it still ran ok despite the timing being out and the crank trying to escape.  There will always be a way round potential issues, it's just a case of finding them.

G'day Fellas.
Down here 91 E10 is a few cents cheaper than standard 91. Add 10c for 95 and another 15c for 98.
I add Sta-bil to keep it fresh. Sometimes one of the bikes may sit for 6 months with fuel in the tank but runs fine.

Hi all,
I have been tpld  a few years ago, that light aircraft use leaded fuel, as when my friend and I visited a local aerodrome, he, a retired fuel additive geek, said that fuel from the depot there would be a good source  for vintage vehicles. ( ? )
