Well ridden a10 with interesting gearbox
« on: 30.10. 2021 20:54 »
Interesting choice of gearbox spotted today at the national motorcycle museum open day today. I think it’s off a matchless. Brake and gearshift switched over too. Looks like it’s covered some good miles

Certainly looks like a typical AMC box as fitted to a zillion Matchless and AJS from about '57, and Nortons of all sorts of course. A neat graft!

Maybe the conversion was to cater for a damaged right ankle or something, or maybe someone just preferred it that way. Nicely spaced ratios in most of the AMCs (I think anyway) but absent an expensive diaphragm clutch, preferably with belt drive, give me the Beesa 4 spring job any day over the 3 spring AMC one!

i see the timing cover has been cut to allow separate removal of the dynamo without disturbing the oil pump
A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.

He’s done something exotic to the front brake too.

I suupose dividing the timing cover is more about setting timing without removing the whole cover rather than dynamo drive access. Nevertheless, both functions are served.

regarding the timing cover. i ve done a similar cut as not only can i remove the dynamo without draining oil from the oil pump area but can also regrease the chain and adjust it properly in minutes. i dont even need to remove the gear lever.
