Sump threads

Wear and tear are taking their toll on the threads for the sump plate, I am planning to replace the screws with studs and nuts but I will need to helicoil two of the holes. Can anyone tell me what helicoil thread I should be buying. I see that the rocker inspection studs are the right size for this (which have two thread pitches) or would it be better to get threaded bar if available?

You need whitworth. If they're hard to find, UNC will do. Helicoils come in different lengths. If you've got the depth, I prefer 1.1/2 x diameter for length. Better too much grip than too little. Also I put helicoils in with a dab of loctite. That way they're less likely to unwind anytime the studs are removed. Studs are always better than threaded rod. I've always found the latter rather roughly made and of dubious quality steel.

Ah!, but the real question is, is the engine in the frame or on the bench? It's possible to do them either way, but takes a lot more thought to get square (that is, 90 degree) holes when in the frame.

You're in luck, I bought a helicoil kit of that size (V-Coil 1/4 Whitworth)  to repair a couple of stripped threads for the tappet covers.  If you pm me your address I'll stick it in the post, use what you need then just post it back when you're done.

Many thanks to Minto for the coil Kit. all went well and the sump is now resplendent in its new studs and lockwired nuts. I went for drilling and lockwiring rather than Locktite as it is much easier to remove the sump to clean the Gauze screen without putting any strain on the stud threads.
So replacing the rear dampers (well worthwhile) led to replacing the single seat as the foam and cover were falling apart. which involved rejigging the rear mudguard and making new brackets.
Found I had run out of front brake adjustment so relined then replacement cable was too long.
Then endless carb flooding with rebuilt monobloc. replaced with the concentric I had run for years.. frayed cable so new cable again too long.. remade that.
 New fuel taps that wouldn't let fuel through and had to be ground out with the Dremmel
Keeps you entertained.
Hopefully that will be it for a while and I can get back to rebuilding the California
