magneto cam ring holder
« on: 05.08. 2021 15:49 »
i have here a cam ring holder part that is for a K2F????? it only has two screw holes and where it fits into the mag it has a chamfer. my other ones don't and they have three screw holes. any of you maggy chaps know what i have got? it does have the twin cylinder cam ring in it. when i try it in my maggs the chamfer bit doesn't fit in the maggs body.

Actually quite a common bit Bergs. Here are a couple. Tired, but similar to your one. Chamfered, two pierced ears only, for fixed camrings, should go on any K2F. One is an early one, with two axial grub screws, rather than the more useful eccentric pin, to retain the cam.

Beware using without being able to check all the usual though (if you were heading that direction).
I had a mate round this afternoon with a similar instrument off an 88 Dommie - the firing interval was 17° off at the mag, or 34° at the crank. Jeez. Initially, I wasn't sure if I was looking at a V twin or a parallel one! But after machining the bearing side (which had been butchered by heavy-handed peening around the race) to round and concentric with the camring side, and sorting out some thicker material to act as an insulating cup, we got the thing back to 180:180 in the end, with equal points gap on both sides. Nothing wrong with the camring itself, good as gold, it was the rest of it  . . .
Omigawd, Lucas knew how to make things that would cause trouble for the next generation!

need to knock up one of these bergs, if not detained for lates and over-served after getting the frame and stopping in for a throat lubricant  . . .

That's clever - drops in the 'points closed' recesses and after a 90* twist a slide hammer pulls the ring out........

Thought it was great (it is too) . . . till I tried it on a single RD!
Another can of worms altogether.

(Slide hammer would do it RD, but I tend to use the threaded hole up t' middle having screwed or clamped the housing to something flat, wind screw in and through  . . . and out she comes. Some heat, decent blast with hot air gun or a flame. If parts are on mag, a tapered  lipped cone to protect the cb end of the armature, and wind against that. Less heat!)

Needs more heat, Keith. Take it to about 150* and the ring should fall out. One of those digital red-dot thermometers is ideal for this sort of work. Was invaluable when heating my Jag cyl head for inserting valve seats and guides. Use it also to compare cylinder / exhaust temperatures on multis.

Cast aluminium, one step up from monkey metal I reckon. Maybe could fix an ear with a lumiweld type product, but never asked anyone to do a proper welding job and lack skills for doing it myself. Quite solid repairs can be done by milling a good flat where there's a break and making a triangle in alu to attach - using a couple of bits of something threaded,  or tight-fitting pins. Done that a few times with semi-reasonable results (given the starting point).

Here's another one Bergs to exercise yer other eye.
Harder job, on a comp mag,  flange seriously mullered and a bit of 10mm plate cut about to make up the missing bit. A decent load-spreading washer essential on refitting though. My mate in this case was not at all wanting to have to buy another  'C'  body, let alone a complete mag.
Used 3mm or 3.5mm allen screws on that as they're tough, and then had to file/grind the heads down a bit to get any sort of shape to it. Tricky angles, so hard to prettify and shame it was the most visible ear when on engine, but there you go. Hole not 100% perfick either, but is serving well (as in 'hasn't fallen to bits'. Yet.)
They are what they are and you just have to do what you can, or shell out quite a few beer vouchers.
(The 'fat' end must be weld-able though by a competent person  . . . counts me out then.)

very good bill i like to see things mended like that because i wouldn't of thought of doing it but i am now. i managed to get the chamfered cam ring holder bit to fit in my maggys, it just needed a flat hand slap!

i have not been to the pub but i might try a slurp tomorrow *beer* having taken note of RDfella saying i needed more heat to get the cam ring out and being impressed by bills cam ring removing tool i had a  *bright idea* . today i made the berger patent cam ring recieving tool. i found a big block of aluminium and gave it a bit of a seeing to in the lathering machine. then i gave the cam ring holder some heat treatment ,the sound of the cam ring dropping into the void was awesome.
