Carpenters bits wanted
« on: 26.06. 2021 11:25 »
Absolutely not BSA related.

Do you have any old style carpenters drill bits, (the type with a tapered square 'tang' for the two-jaw chuck of a brace) that you no longer want? My son is into woodland crafting. He's bought a Brace but now needs some bits for it. If you would be willing to flog them, please let me know what you want for them.

Hi GB

I hate to throw stuff away. Had the following for probably 40+ years and never used them, I don’t even know if they are any good.

Pic with brace is I think what you are looking for. If they are shall I also send the brace.
Other pic, whilst getting these out of my woodwork draw I found these not sure what they are for, but can include in same shipment.
If you want them, they are free to a good home, PM me the address

If these are any good to GB The Younger, he's welcome to 'em. (No money involved, be pleased to help a good cause.)
There are 8 of, non-matching as you can see,  biggest 1", smallest 1/2", by stages (and duplication at 5/8" and 9/16" by the looks of). Scruffy with surface rust in places from long term non-use, but nowt much wrong with them otherwise.
So, if you don't get anyone coming back to you from nearer at hand, I can post these any time. Just lemme know!
Cheers, Bill

PS Just seen Angus' note - spoilt for choice mate!

Angus, yes please to those bits. Those T-shaped jobbies are Gimlets. Conversation continued in a private message.

Many thanks Bill. I've asked Angus for his ones. The postage should be much cheaper than from you. If my son needs more bits, or different sizes may I come back to you?

Those things bring back pleasant memories of lying under houses in mud and spider webs and little space boring holes through hardwood for electrical outlets.

I used to use one for boring holes into birch trees for the sap to brew birch sap champagne. I" auger bit, 1 day drain yields nearly a gallon of sap then plug the hole with a demijohn cork to stop it bleeding out.

Found myself using brace and bit just yesterday. The easy path compared to either charging a tool battery or running a long extension, or worse still getting the generator out. And I got to remember Dad, the previous owner!

A bit off topic
I am a member of a Mensshed group and we just keep buying power tools. I must admit to sometimes get cross. Someone wants to cut a piece of 4X2, they move the table saw about plug it in and start adjusting the blade and fence, I pickup a hand saw put the wood on a trestle and cut the wood, they look at me like I am mad, but they still don’t have the dam power tool setup and the jobs done.

Lol
I remember doing some flooring and skirting work some years ago, and had to "take a break" cos my electric screwdriver had ran out of charge, an hour later I remembered "normal screwdrivers"!
I've met so called chippies who can't actually cut straight or square with a hand saw.

I'm not a chippy but do like working with wood and I do have decent hand saws but have to admit I do need to mark right around any workpiece with a pencil to guide my hand/eye (and both legs are equal in length )
All the best - Bill

If not, you keep going round in circles. 😁
