     Seriously, if there was a major internal problem it would tighten up or seize in the first hundred yards. Save the surgery for the winter months but treat gently in the meantime until that crank oilway has been checked and cleaned.

   You can take off the timing cover and check the crank for lift in the timing bush as a rough guide to engine health. Dynamo chain runs in grease... the cavity often found to be empty, folks think it's lubricated from the engine. It ain't. Adjusting the dynamo chain will also quieten it down a bit and stop it machining away the inner cover screw boss.

You mean, BSA didn't intend the dynamo chain to eat away at that screw boss?? *eek*
