that's an odd list Musky - they appear to have forgotten the a10, tho approve a65s! you better get that fixed. A10s for ok for learners in NZ under our 'Lams' specs which is about 'power and capability':
https://www.nzta.govt.nz/driver-licences/getting-a-licence/licences-by-vehicle-type/motorcycles/lams/lams-approved-and-prohibited-motorcycles/ - any BSA upto 650cc.

my 17 year old is in a similar dilemma, having just about convinced his mother (tho not so sure I'm keen). a light bike would be better to learn on and for the first 'offs'. his spec includes being 40 years old (for cheap rego) but he's favouring old japanese bikes and refusing to even consider a BSA! what's happened to the youth of today  *sad2*

I don't blame him. Bantams etc are great little bikes but I'd rather learn on something new, reliable and disposable. ;)

Thank guys. More research required from me.

I had a Triumph Trailblazer back in the 70's. I loved it. https://images.app.goo.gl/fBytuKzbNKCEBC6w7

Yeah - I've no clue how modern rules might need to be applied for engine sizes and outputs. And it's not for me to bring my own prejudices against Bantams to the argument either. I suppose my biggest problem with them is the stupid prices that they seem to command now.

back in the 60s when I did mine the limit was 250 cc and I believe if you had a sidecar you could use a 650 as a learner .
I had a 5 pound ex GPO bantam as my first bike then a c15 for my test .

Excelsior Consort 98cc, then 650 Ariel Huntmaster, (virtually an A10) with a sidecar chassis, on which was bolted my toolbox, (for ballast)

That's very close ,my old man wouldn't allow me to have a "tiddler" so He got me a BSA plunger A10 with the most ginormous d/adult sidecar on it , lovely motor He told me ,he was right , shame about the clutch , He'd got it from Messrs Bill Hannah, who was a bit of a rogue in liverpool .The buggers towed it to our shop dropped it outside and skidaddled rapidly . I was left to move it round the corner ,I started her up dropped th clutch gently and the cluctch let go . Not the best of starts but a second hand clutch and it was great bike ,that sidecar went very quickly replaced by a back door gate bolted to it ,followed by a sports chair to which we added the most outrageous wording and transfers ie I'm a pheasant plucker and he's a pheasant pluckers son etc ,I eventually passed my test on a hoda 50 being the only bike available due to the mag playing up on the A10 ,still counted !!
