Should I buy this lamp unit?
« on: 19.05. 2021 14:11 »
This 7" unit is being offered for £15 local to me. Seems cheap. Should I buy it? My bike is still 6v electrics at the moment.

Update: Seems that is not such a bargain. I see them for £13 plus tax and postage

Won't fit a BPF bulb. Genuine Lucas (as opposed to new Lucas) ones are not that thin on the ground.

I was thinking along the lines of using the correct bulb but then, I'd probably have to convert to 12v lecky. It's not really worth the expense and effort; I rarely ride in the dark. Neil says no 😒

you could put a 6v LED into it as its an H4 and LEDs tend to fit H4 reflectors. that would also take the load off your dynamo. i'm still running a 6v LED from classicdynamoconversions (google it) that claims 4000 lumens. its pretty bright - so you are  more easily seen on the roads - but the light is still a bit 'thin' for proper nighttime riding (as i re-discovered last week). not that you are allowed to do that, apparently.

Years ago I came across a bargain sealed beam lamp unit. Further close examination showed it was for right hand dip, so no good for UK roads. Just another thing to consider, along with dusty inside glass and tarnished reflectors on NOS items with detachable bulbholdes  left open and on the shelf for 30 years.
