Alternator primary

Hi Trevinoz, nice collection of BSA’s you have, I’m a senior rider having bought my first new BSA  A7SS in 1957, and still am a great lover of thee BSA's, I have one nearing completion now and desperately require a set of Primary cases from a police bike fitted with an Alternator  on the end of the shaft, in the cases, seeing you are obviously a long time BSA fan, I was wondering if you have ever came across any or could give me a clue where to obtain a set, I’ve rebuilt the motor and bike but now need to find the cases, I’ve been looking for a couple of years now and not looking forward to building up a set, any help would be appreciated, regards DDN.

Hi Don.
The last set that I saw was in my mate's shed but he sold them to a bloke who fitted an alternator to a Super rocket.
Occasionally they turn up at swap meets, usually one half at a time.

Hi All
Those single cylinder alternator cases are different to the twin type
To the best of my knowledge the stator on the twins is mounted on the outer case ? Anyway they are easy to recognise
as there is an inspection cover at the alternator end

Being in Australia we don’t have the scope of the Swap Meets that you appear to have in the UK, but I’ll keep looking, it would be good to know the countries that the Police Bikes were exported to, it would help in the search. Thanks for your reply. DDN.

Most likely to find one in SA
NSW used Triumphs
SA used BSA's
Most of the alternator models I have seen have come from SA, not that it is all that many.
From memory ( which is always dangerous with me  ) there were 4 alternator A 10's at Halls Gap
Three were in police trim and one civilian

an alternative would be to run a belt drive and drill and tap the crankcase for 3 stator bolts. once oil is no problem you could machine your standard cases to poke the stator through and make/ weld a cover.

Shouldn't  need to change to belt drive, these alternators were used for years with primarys in oil baths, or have I missed something?

Well I might do the cutting but I would get somebody else to do the welding cos I have witnessed my welding before and its not pretty

cutting holes in the primary cover and watching the clutch was all the rage once. maybe use a scottoiler on the chain?
