6 volt Coil with two HT leads
« on: 01.04. 2020 11:44 »
It's me again, the Thorspark Ignition problems are ongoing.

So I've swapped the HT leads and tried to set the timing and now the strobe is working, but only flashing on every other rev? I take the bike up the road and it's spitting, banging etc. etc.

I've now turned my attention to the 6 volt coil supplied with the Thorspark Kit, it's a modern one with two  output leads. I've tested it and the readings are:

Primary = 4.7 ohms and Secondary = 16.69 K/ohms

Does the the figure of 16.69 seems high? I have sent these readings to Sussex Motorcycles for their comments.

G'day Terry.
I'm not an auto sparky's tit but I would assume that a 6 volt system would require a lower primary and secondary resistance.
My 12v Boyer runs similar figures to yours but a bit lower on the secondary.
Cheers

That’s a strangely high primary impedance, for a 6 V coil.  Are you sure it’s a 6 V coil?

Secondary ohms looks ok.

Thorspark systems get mixed reports.

I get good service from the Wassell/Vape ignition.

Hi Guy's,

Been in touch with Thorspark and I've sent the coil back to them for testing. The readings that I'm getting are possibly not what they should be. So we'll see, I'll report back when I know what's been decided.

Cheers and Stay Safe.

Sorry Triton for answering your question. The coil I'm using came with the original kit which although it's not marked, was ordered for 6v positive earth usage  It's been running fine for nearly 4 years 6 months,  but I've never questioned it.

If it was a 12v coil supplied, would it work on a 6v system?

Just to close out this thread. Thorspark has replaced my coil, but still supply kit without any manufacturer's label or confirm that it is 6v rated. Fitted and there is an improvement, Strobe still only works on one HT lead.

Many thanks for your input guy's.
