Thanks for that informative post. If you are French, I hope I'm allowed to complement your written English. My French is almost non-existent. We did not do languages at my school; we did woodwork, metalwork and technical drawing instead.  *conf*

Well thank you Neil ! Yes I am French. I quickly learned on my own that if I wanted answers to anything, I'd better ask in English. I didn't learn much from school really, it is more of a constant exposure to movies, articles, music, meeting people online with the same hobbies,...
I wish there was woodwork, metal work and technical drawing at the schools I went to...
I feel like nowadays we aren't taught to do anything with our hands. Gosh I would've loved metal shaping and welding classes...

Ah, les français et l'anglais, généralement c'est la galère, congratulations pour cette excellente maitrise.

I cheated :O) went to school in France when young(er lol). So kept in contact and dividing year between Norway and France.

Still climbing ladders and battling (but fun actually) fixing up my old house in F, when hopefully under control one day (and health permits) will bring my dismantled A10 there and start working on it. Will be in a very similar situation as Anthony (Antoine? :O)

And yes, knowledge 'material' and craft are declining, eclipsed by computers. Look at the kids coming out of school, the nose and the brain nailed in their phone.

Interesting to see both lines together; there are words from the same base in both languages. Not surprising really, the French ran this country for 500 years!

Welcome, on the frame number, nearly all A7/A10 frames have “A7” in them, with a letter preceding the “A7” that denotes year. The swing arm A7 frame is the same as the A10’s.

More info is on https://www.bsaownersclub.co.uk/yearlisting.html

The original “Despatch” books from BSA show the exact date of manufacture of engines and frames, there are various ways of getting the despatch record info should you want it. It’s not that common for an engine to have stayed with the frame BSA installed it in eg the so called “matched numbers” scenario.

BSA did not stamp the engine and frames of A10’s with identical numbers. See an example of (my) numbers below.
New Zealand

1956 A10 Golden Flash  (1st finished project)
1949 B31 rigid “400cc”  (2nd finished project)
1968 B44 Victor Special (3rd finished project)
2001 GL1800 Goldwing, well, the wife likes it

If you’re in for some stylish “je m’en fous” riding, you (and your uncle) made the right choice... *wink2*

Your google translate is gentle GB. When a Frenchman says “c’est un galère “ he really means; “it’s a hell of a cock up”  *lol*

And there are loads of A10s and A7s here in France Anthony, so no shortage of folk to talk to as you get the hang of the beast.

There aren't many younger owners in any country, so 'Chapeau' to you for your enthusiasm. I've lived here nearly 20 years and I only know a couple of guys with classic machines who are under the age of 35. Most of us are positively creaky by comparison.
Where are you as a matter of interest? (This is a big place!)
A lot of the people here use this site/forum, if it's of any interest to you / you haven't come across it: http://bsamicale.forumsactifs.net/
and there are loads of retro-moto clubs if you are the sort of person who likes doing stuff with other like-minded people in what is the most classic-bike friendly country in Europe I'd say.
Good luck.

Thanks Groily !
I live in Dijon, but my garage is at my parents' house in Sens, in the northern tip of Bourgogne. And you where are you ?
I just registered to the Amicale BSA forum. I found it when I was seeking the french BSA Owners Club, but it appears it doesn't exist anymore...
