Spanners copped

Took some stuff to our local rubbish & recycling facility this morning. There is a charity shop there. I copped some nice Imperial spanners and a handy small screwdriver. It's often worth going through the boxes at these places. The spanners I selected are all in good nick; some of my old Britool spanners are a bit stretched. Is it unusual to see a Whitworth spanner made in the USA? I like a short spanner; makes it harder to overtighten me nuts!

Never liked Britool. Stahlwille for me. Bit expensive, but they're thin and don't stretch.

When I were a youn-un I bought a lot of Britool stuff from a chap that came to the workshop in a van. I have picked up* a couple of Stahlwille spanners over the years and I agree, they are lovely tools.

*When I say picked up, that's exactly what happened. I used to cycle to work. If I noticed something bright in the gutter, I'd stop and pick it up.

talking of spanners I remember a thread about locknuts , you know half nuts. well on the morris hate I discovered the axle U bolts had the half nuts after the big nut. on the petrol tank straps the big nut was after the half nut and I had to grind a spanner down to get it in … one for the proper engineers me thinks

In my misspent youff as well as BSA's I worked on Mk 2 Jags (went on to own 14 plus 2 "s"types  in total over some yrs) and to tighten a bolt at the rear of the cyl head insitu I bent a 9/16ths spanner in a very neat "s" to sort it I still have it in a toolbox  in the garage .

I also have a modified spanner. I cannot remember why I did it.

Nice find. Never thought of looking in our “free-cycle” section of the tip, will do from now on.

Good find GB. I just bought a set of new King Dick whitworth spanners, nice quality. I remember as an apprentice a lot of the tradesmen had KD tools.
I have quite a few "modified" spanners, sockets etc for special jobs. Usually made from cheap stock.

 Over here the brand you want is Snap-On or Blue Point, the Whitworth stuff is hard to find from them.

 Its rare for anyone here to know about KD tools.

I have some Snap-On stuff. It's good.

My mechanic mate up the road only has SnapOn or Wurth tools. You can borrow them but he comes with them @ $80/hour!
