I put a mikuni on a 1960 shooting star engine, it was advertised as jetted for the bike, I did some plug chops and am very happy with it apart from cold starting , probably my fault [its always my fault *whistle* ] putting the choke on and giving it some throttle as well-- old habits after tickling the amal ;)

A 26 mm concentric might be worth considering. Easy to get, easy to tune, plenty of parts. Also you'd be supporting a company who's taken the time & effort to cater for our 'obsolete' machines.
( I'm in no way connected to the company)

Frankly I'd fit a monobloc - may not be 'modern' but they can be bought new and are thoroughly reliable. Used on many models of BSA
'49 B31, '49 M21, '53 DOT, '58 Flash, '62 Flash special, '00 Firestorm, Weslake sprint bike.

I used an Amal Premier on my 51 A7 mainly because space was tight between the head and the down-tube.
Well pleased with it.
