frame number / registration

Having given up with my GF, I’m turning my attention to another vee twin project that’s been on the back burner for far too long. Problem that’s been worrying me about this for a while is registration when I’ve completed it. When I bought the frame over 20 yrs ago, there were no documents with it, and it seems to me that unless I can prove it was previously registered, it will be classed as a new machine – and therefore have to comply with all the latest legislation (which it won’t). I don't want to waste my time building a special that causes me maximum grief to put on the road. When I did my M21 special many years ago it sailed through registration, because I had documents and a registration number.
The frame I intend using this time appears to be an A series from ’62 – frame no GA7 23619.
Is there anyway to prove it’s been registered previously? I’ve read that an HPI check on the frame number might throw light on it, but the only chap I knew who could do that for me was my mate who worked in vehicle licensing. Sadly, he died just before Christmas. Should have asked him sooner.
Alternatively, I’ll be looking for someone who’s scrapping a similar frame so I can use the documents from that.
Any ideas welcome.

Hi,
     You are worrying unduly. I have put a few together, obtained an age related plate using the original standards and MOT free for the future.The process can be frustrating but being patient and polite with the authorities helps as they will be on your side and guide you. Worth a read:

When registering a bike with DVLA which has been built up it is important not to describe any of the major components (frame/wheels/forks/engine gearbox) as new , that leads to a "Q" plate. Describe them as what they are - refurbished parts.

Part out the Flash and keep the frame and reg
You will make some cash as well 

Before I rebuilt the last A10 for a customer, I advised him to part it out and buy a sorted /rebuilt bike as it would save him a pile of money
He wanted to go ahead anyway 
He took the rolling chassis away and had it  the parts repainted   wheels rebuilt, and so on and so on
while I got stuck into the engine gearbox  etc
When I got the barely rolling chassis back  I had to re do most of the refitting again
It was the biggest pain int the idiot ever
But I got it sorted in the end, His bill was eye watering though, Gold Star / RGS territory   

No wonder I am finding it hard to get going on the RGS 
I am getting through the 24 Flat tank 350ohv though, it should be ready before the Summer
house repairs/ renovations permitting

had given the idea of a frame swap a fair bit of thought. Only thing that's putting me off at present is the dismantling / selling of bits hassle. And I'm trying to keep away from the bike anyway, as I'm likely to lose my temper with it. I intend getting a mate to have a look at the golden disaster to see if he can sort the oil & dynamo issues. At least it would then be saleable and out of my sight. Weak front brake and weeping fork are at present the only other issues, but that's unlikely to put a buyer off. No oil flow is a rather bigger put-off.

One of the biggest problems is obtaining a sensible dating letter. The VMCC want half a dozen pics of the complete bike and it can't be too far from standard either. Don't know how much nit-picking the BSAOC do, and you'll be lucky to find a frame with a genuine V5 for sale unless you buy a complete bike with V5 (££££s).  Swap over the bits then rebuild that pile of parts to sell on a project, but that's a lot of outlay and work. Building specials just ain't as easy as it used to be.

When I registered mine in 1990ish  I obtained a dating cert for the frame from th BSAOC for the princely cost of £5 as I was a member ,I'd had to supply rubbings of the frame number and that was accepted by DVLA  .I had to use the frame number to originally insure the bike and get it MOT'd ,then took the bike and all docs receipts etc to them in Preston ,2 weeks later I had a V5 . So start with BSAOC and take it from there .

Success at last. Good old Percy Verance. Chap from another forum was willing, for a very reasonable consideration, to try an HPI. Came up with all the registration details incl engine no, colour, change of reg number etc etc. Apparently it was a '62 GF.

Registration update:
Having cleared my head of the aggravation with my GF, I’m at last concentrating on the vee twin project that’s been on the back burner for too long. So far so good – having now sorted the registration worries, I’ve started the trial assembly. Looks like it will fit a treat (’62 A10 frame).
