Crunch into first

 Talking to other bike owners it seems most British bikes crunch into first gear when rolling.

 Mine will easily slip into first and neutral at a stand still, but it does crunch into first at anything over a couple miles per hour, and below that it will bang into first.

 Is this a common trait, or just a sign of 60 year old parts?

my Fiesta has a little arrow on the display to let you know your in fourth and got one more to go upwards, my Flash like yours has the audio system lets you know the next gear down is PUSH
