torrington crowded needle rollers

while messing with a layshaft blind needle roller bearing one of the rollers managed to come out. so then this enabled me to get them all out, this has made it easy to clean it up but does anyone who has dealt with these bearings know if they are made to come out or stay fixed. if they are not made to come out I will know what I have to do next , buy a new one *whistle*

The rolled edge of the drawn bearing shell should keep the needle rollers in place.

ok cheers for that julianS I thought I might have accidently found the jigsaw piece that was meant to come out to clean them out *problem* *bash* *cry* o well a new one it is then *roll*

Hi Berger,
Unfortunately Julian is correct, the bearing is toast *ex*
The crowded roller bearings with the OH marking (oil hole) are getting scarce and hard to find
The caged bearings that are often offered as "suitable spares" have a much lower load factor
The layshaft bearings are under the oil level so there's an argument as to whether the oil holes are needed or not
Magnetoman has posted lots about the BSA needle roller boxes on Britbike forum

haha 55 gallons of leaking fish tank, that has done me never mind all the other information *help* tanks for the link]pun intended] I will check the washer thicknesses but I am pretty sure they are ok looking at 10 thou of layshaft end float , the needle roller that has dropped its needles [damn them living Christmas trees] was in a tub with two other of the open ended bearings. the blind one in the casing is full of crap so I guess I need a new one because it's proving a sod to flush out *problem*

 All sounds fishy....

 Hey bergs, just curious, but before you fill  the box with gears and close it up, can you tell me where the layshaft oil feed hole in the case is ?
  The one in my Plunger box is above the bush in line with the mainshaft, but am thinking the roller box hole is elsewhere
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'
Have a '74 850T Moto Guzzi since '92-best thing I ever bought doesn't need a kickstart 'cos it bump starts sooooooooo(mostly) easy

haha that was a good read but as charterlea said it could hurt ya brain, it made me chuckle when I got to the fish tank bit. right back to the ole, the ole is about 45ish degrees sort of 2pmish in line diagonally with the ole for the selector shaft. PUB tomorrow  *beer*

The swinging arm box cases both needle roller and plain bearing have the oil hole atabout 45 degrees.

I have not been to the pub-but am going tomorrow , been looking for gearbox layshaft crowded rollers and the only ones I see don't have the oil hole, so has anyone used these none hole ones and do you think they are ok to use. I have thought about grinding a couple of slots in the layshaft spacing washers to help oil get in there. anybody got any opinions on these none holed bearings or where they stock holed ones *dunno*

berger - have you tried BSL / RHP?  Always found them helpful.

RD fella all the ones I've searched [plenty googling] don't have the lube hole , just wonder if people have used the none lube hole ones without problems hence my thought of grinding the thrust washers with a couple of grooves to help oil feed a bit *dunno2*
