just saw it on Ebay , description reads as below (it's got that WW prefixed part No  but lets not prejudge), I like the reference to "after market anodised" wonder who that could be  *smile*

well I am going for , or going to THE PUB! *beer* *countdown* never been hepolite, they don't exist . wassell is the name and under the lax british laws they are probably made in Taiwan , packaged in Britain which loosely allows the made in England bit and put in made to look old hepolite printed boxes etc

Scotty - according to the ad, £328 including postage. At that price I'd prefer splash lubrication....

Dear Wassel,

If you are reading here (as you should be), please show us the facility in the UK where these pumps are made. It should be worth your while, considering over 1000 forum members and more bikes than members.

PS - Yes, I am well aware this is wishful thinking with next to no chance of approaching reality. It should take more than slick packaging and unsubstantiated claims to steer us away from a known product of high qualty, which is made by a dedicated manufacturer who we can reach directly on the phone to discuss their product at length, if we choose.

Don’t remember how much I payed for the SRM one all those years ago but I can say that it’s still going strong.

I do pay attention, I also forget quite a lot - somewhere between the two this one existed then vaporised *whistle*

I'm not going to slag this item off on the basis it may be made elsewhere, got a fair few foreign bits on my bike that work ok, if Tiawan had made Lucas lookalike tail-lights in the 1950s I wonder who BSA would have bought from. *conf2*

I was not implying that this part, or any parts, couldn't be good if made off one's own shore. However, if the claim is made of a trusted origin, it should be verifiable. The other point was claiming it to be better than the SRM pump (a known quantity) without verification, and at a few GBP more.,

As I understand it, this pump of unknown origin has a cast iron body, whilst the SRM one has an aluminium body. Assuming - and this is the operative word - that the materials and machining are of equal quality, then the cast iron pump will be best.
Gear pumps are a pain generally, as they tend to lose pressure when hot. And an aluminium body magnifies the problem, due to expansion of the body away from the gears.
The original pumps in the singles were of a zinc type material. It would shrink on the spindles and wear around the gears. Changing to an aftermarket cast iron gear case was a huge improvement.
But at the sort of money being asked - SRM or 'hepolite' - I'd rather make my own.  If the pump we're talking about was in volume production, manufacturing cost would be around £1 each. But this is limited batch production, so the price will obviously be higher. But 300x? If it can't be sold for £100 retail, someone needs to look at the production process, especially with the advantage of today's CNC machines.
It has been my policy for years, that if something's worth £1000 then I'll happily pay £1000 for it, but I refuse to pay £1000 for something that I know is only worth £20. Having been in research and development (hence my handle) I know it is not uncommon for a retail price to be 20x the value to the manufacturer. In the 70's when I was working on transmission design, I learnt a certain major motor manufacturer would only pay $15 for a car differential. The retail price at the local dealer was £650. A pressure release valve worth perhaps 2p retailed at £8. And Ford's 6 litre 6 cyl diesel engine owed them £50 - the retail price of the engine's gasket set.  People generally don't realise how much they're paying over the odds.

BigJim - no, not me. A rocker from the 60's more like, riding Velocettes and Tritons - just an old f@rt now. I do have part of a Yam though - YB, I think, with a Weslake speedway engine.
Your post reminds me of the guy I mentioned (in another post) who made his own piston on an old treadle lathe and topped 100mph in a sprint with it. His workshop was an old chicken shed with an earth floor and petrol (not paraffin) heater, but what came out of there beat everything else. I used to go there of an evening about once a month and it was always amusing to see his reaction to two strokes. Whenever he heard one going past up the road he'd hurl something across the workshop and yell with passion about 'bloody japanese machines'. Needless to say he would have nothing to do with them. A real character, no longer with us. He would have been in his 60's in the 1960's.
