ATF for primary chain lubrication. Which one to use or are they all the same?

Not all ATF the same,  car transmissions need the one specified by the maker.

Have recently installed an SRM clutch and they advise against using ATF as they contain antifriction additives which make the clutch slip. They advise 10/30 or 10/40 engine oil.

Following that advice I use 10/40.

SRM also say that if you use an in line oil filter and use multi grade oil the warranty on their engine rebuilds is invalidated. Rather peculiar stance to take isn't it? I sometimes have to wonder about SRM.  Even BSA in later years were recommending multi grade oil. Greybeard which one do you use, I was contemplating Halfords own brand, since Halfords is the only auto accessory shop that is local to me.

I took some advice soon after joining this forum to have three different oil types so I could see where the leaks were coming from.

On the plunger, the clutch runs dry(ish). The lubrication is mainly only for the chain

 Something I know little about, but the question was asked a couple of years ago and if I recall the answers were varied then, but I think the consensus *may* have been 'F' type.....

 last lot I bought is Penrite Multi-Vehicle DX-111, but as I have some hydraulic oil to use up, I've also been using that; I think it's a ISO 30

 The answers will be many and varied (like all oil threads) and they all still leak

I use tractor universal 10W-30. It's for hydraulics, engines and oil-immersed brakes. Perfect for BSA chaincases in fact. And cheap.

we don't have oil drips, we don't like them me and betsy she doesn't leak anywhere now i've changed gearbox , I just get breather mist. and now ive swapped gearing to road rocket gearing 21 engine 19 gearbox shes going like a rocket and dropped at least a couple of hundred revs , and goes in and out of 1st and 2nd gear at a standstill with the so called horrible 6 spring that doesn't slip when she gets over 5500rpm very pleased with how the beast has taken the gearing it was a pleasure blasting up the carriage way,and the 3rd gear whine has disappeared somewhere

The general advice is to ignore what anyone else tells you, just put in what ever you fancy.   

Fosters is nice.
