New Year's Resolution - A challenge to you all !!

Hi Folks. Just wondering if this might spur some people on to make progress with their projects this year. I have two bikes in the garage which I used to use but when I built the garage extension in 2010 I took the bikes to my mother's house for storage. The first bike is a RGS lookalike which runs OK but looks really tatty as I nicked the mudguards and exhausts off it when I built my Super Rocket. (The Super Rocket isn't concourse, it's just a daily rider and the mudguards and exhaust from the RGS were getting tatty anyway.)
The second bike is my special with the Rotax engine which you can see on my avatar. This has also been out of commission for the last seven years. It needs some attention to the electrics and a new rear wheel with a cush drive fitting as, at present, there is no cush drive.
My New Year's Resolution is to get the RGS lookalike smartened up and back on the road AND to resolve the cush drive issue on the Rotax Goldie special ready for it to go back on the road.
Maybe if others out there would be willing to make their resolutions public we could review progress next Christmas so the shame of failure might spur us on! I'll take a couple of 'before' photos later today and add them to my post. Even if nobody else joins in, by making this public commitment, I have half a chance of getting these bikes back on the road!!

First of all, I'm really happy to read that you are able to come out and play.


I only have one motorbike but it does need some attention. Every autumn when I take her off the road I think I'll deal with those things I noticed during the summer; however every winter other stuff, and lack of motivation to go out to a cold shed get in the way and I end up in March quickly bodge fixing the things I must do. I bought a new camshaft from you a few years ago; I still haven't installed it. I therefore will not make any committments but I wish you and anyone else who makes resolutions good willpower.

Last year my successful resolution was to recommission the A10 and Enfield, both lying since 2000.  As a consequence, this year's one is to get the house into some sort of presentable order.

Andrew, Ditto GB regarding your ability to partake of lighter matters.

I think there may be some missing-of-the-point regaridng the resolutions. The point, I think, is to lay it on the line as inspiration to get it done and, maybe, to laugh at ourselves (and at eachother in a friendly way) when we don't.

This said, I'll take the bait. First, a resolution that I totally expect to fail: Make the '55 A10 4-5% faster by losing 25 lbs. Second, finally get the powder coating done on the barn-find '57 A7.  Third, finally get the crank ground and timing-side bush fit for the A7. I could go on and on, but couldn't we all?  If any one of these happens I will now feel triumphant (Beezamphant?)

Richard L..... FYI I lost two stone before Christmas on doctor's advice. It was quite easy really, I just stopped eating and drinking all the things I like! According to my BMI reference I am no longer 'clinically obese', just at the higher end of 'overweight'. I would have to lose another two stone to cease being overweight; that's not going to happen so, on to a resolution with greater chances of success......
.... and, as promised the 'before' pics of my 2018 projects.  The Rotax 'Thingy' needs more than would appear. The back wheel needs changing for something with a cush drive and the electrics need sorting so that the battery doesn't overcharge. There are also some cosmetic issues to deal with. The cush drive issue is a bit of a head scratcher because it will likely involve switching the brake to the other side which will affect lots of other things. The RGS lookalikey needs all the chromeware, including the wheel rims, replacing, some paint touching up then she should be fine for the road again. So that's me, making the commitment for 2018, anybody else biting the bait? It would be good to see how people are getting on even if we/they fail!

A big factor in this is that those of us who are married owned don't really have much say in how our time is used, (or is that just me?).

That's why a year is alotted for 16 hours of work (which includes driving to and fro for the shop work) over four days.

With the SR I would like to somehow rectify the charging system no-charge situation. Pun intended.
Also, it would be nice to see if it is capable of more than just local riding. I think it is, but vibration and lack of power might preclude rides that involve climbing big mountain grades.
I wonder if a dynamic crank balance and drop back to stock gearing might be the best route.
It currently has a 23 tooth engine sprocket, fine for flatlands and smooth to 65 mph, but probably geared too high for the mountains.

If all of that gets done and works out, then I plan to get the  SR started on those ever expanding Circles of Confidence.

My 2 year restoration of the '51 plunger has been and gone, it's now a 3year resolution.
My wife's 2017 resolution was a new concrete driveway, new plaster cornices, remodel interior, all new doors throughout the house, new carpet & timber flooring, interior painted,    
After the kitchen is updated I HOPE to get stuck into the plunger.

G'day all.
Mine is to give the 51 A7 a fresh'n up. She's been using a 53 frame for quite a few years and I know the ts bush is shot.
So once I move house (haven't sold here yet) and set up the new shed, the Muskette will need alterations in the house, find a job etc. Straighten the 51 frame, rebuild motor (not sure if I'll put it back to small fin & iron head), a little chrome and new paint.

2017 was very much a game of two halves for me. Following the initial triumph of somehow having 10 of my bikes running and street legal back in May time I then suffered a series of catastrophic failures – never mind the futility and expense of maintaining a fleet of that size. So I’ve since been working through a series of larger problems and also decided to reduce numbers a bit. My A10, albeit admittedly with minimal use has suffered only a couple of very minor issues. And I’ve already suffered a failure this year with my Nimbus stopping charging when out on it last Thursday night.

Although still having to work full time to earn a crust, I am afforded the luxury of being able to have plenty garage time at the weekends, even if my house does seem to have started falling down. So I’m already up to my armpits in several larger projects that have arisen from failures, and have dicided there needs to be some rationalisation by letting a few bikes go – as soon as I can get them running again so as to maximise my (ahem) investment.
