I managed to find the time to change the rear light assembly on Black Beauty.

This said, I'll take the bait. First, a resolution that I totally expect to fail: Make the '55 A10 4-5% faster by losing 25 lbs. Second, finally get the powder coating done on the barn-find '57 A7.  Third, finally get the crank ground and timing-side bush fit for the A7. I could go on and on, but couldn't we all?  If any one of these happens I will now feel triumphant (Beezumphant?)

Resolution # 1: No way.
Resolution # 2: Done! Ha!  *woo*  *smile*
Resolution # 3: We'll see.

Well, along with all the BSA's and other marques, I am achieving some of the targets from the NY Resolutions.

Hot off the press; finished the Burman Q gearbox for the 1927 Ariel, an hour ago!

Now sitting in the frame; trial assembly before painting.

Next job for today; 1960 SR front brake.

Just when you thought it was safe and we'd forgotten the pledges we made! I am pleased to report that my RGS lookalike is now back on the road having undergone a complete rebuild. The engine has had a reground crank, sludge trap cleaned, dynamo belt drive. The heavy cycle parts have been stove enameled. The other cycle parts cleaned and polished, new mudguards and exhaust. The instruments have been serviced by 'Chronometrics', fork stanchions hard chromed. New alloy rims fitted by myself, new TT100 tyres. Converted to 12v. The bike rides quite nicely but I've only ridden it once so far, a trip of about 25 miles. It is a bit 'tappety' as yet but will improve as I iron out shakedown issues. The project took just under eight weeks from start to finish, but don't forget I had built this bike myself about twenty years ago so it just wanted stripping and rebuilding. Any parts I needed were sourced from my own business of course!

I must confess I will probably not get the Rotax engined special back on the road this year as I have decided to replace this project with a standard Golden flash. It is a bike I bought about ten years ago as a basket case. I intend to get this on the road by the end of the year. It will be built as a 'daily rider' so lots of deviations from standard and certainly not concourse. I'll be making the least work possible so I can get it on the road and use it. I may sell it when finished.

I should have asked in my previous post.... How are other projects progressing? Let's get some more BSA's back on the road!

Looks good. Certainly a lot better than anything I've managed this year.

Shop got my Sportster sorted – dying electronic ignition. That has been used as the station bike over the summer.

Still haven’t looked at the Sunbeam that I need to get going so that I can sell it.
Put the bottom end back together on the Bantam Board Track Racer but then got bored with it.
Need to pull the Helix ‘super’ scooter out and sell it on for spares or repairs.
Issues with the T3 on my brief Scottish tour mean that is grounded pending a gearbox inspection and coils replacement.
ZRX1200R is already SORNed and back in storage for winter (shop does an required work on that one).

Think I’m still going backwards with bikes failing faster than I’m fixing.

Don't give up on that Sunbeam. I have just finished mine and I love it.

We have not seen you at the Rising Sun for a while. Come up next month and hopefully we can give you some inspiration to have another go at it.

The Sunbeam is a sad story – and tied up to my A10. It may be one I’ve told before.

The first holiday I had with my girlfriend, now wife, was to St Just at the tip of Cornwall in 1979. We rode down from mid-Essex on the A10 that I had not long bought, in the company of my pal on his TR6P Saint with his girlfriend – my girlfriend’s best pal. My A10 gave no end of trouble that week and ended up being towed behind my mate’s Trumpet all the way home from around Plymouth at the end of the week. We put the girls on the train at Exeter with as much of the luggage as they could manage. Whilst we were in St Just there was an S7D in that lovely mist green parked outside one of the cottages. It really caught my imagination and was on my mind ever after.

Eventually luck and some money came my way, and after some haggling I bought a 1950 model from a vendor on ebay. It was not cheap. He had just completed putting it back together and it came with loads of receipts for new parts. And that’s where my luck ran out. That must have been maybe around 4 years or so ago now. I had to fit a new Stuarts Concentric before it would run. Spent some small amount of time determining that the motor actually did have pretty much zero oil pressure, and then work around the half timing wheel, and pulling out all of the oddly bodged oil filtration in the sump made no difference. Replaced the knackered clutch whilst I was in there. Had Stuarts sort the dynamo at some huge expense. Then gave up and handed it over to Clive who went right through the motor, gearbox and drive box. Bottom line was that the engine had previously been assembled with no great care at all, to the extent that most of the new stuff in there now needed replacing again. And he found that some much earlier historic head replacement had led to misaligned oil feed to the head and the cam was scrap too.

So I’ve thrown effort and money and love at it. I’ve had a marque expert work his magic on it. And it still won’t’ run for more than a few miles before it just quits. And yes I’ve been through the entire fuel supply side, and all new ign components, even switching to a wasted spark approach – at which point it now won’t run at all.

Now in many ways I am a rational man, but I am prone to ascribing sentient behaviour to what can only be inanimate objects (bikes).  I show them love and look after them, and they look after me. And that actually pretty much works. This bike will not respond to that. I now hate it. And in all honesty, they may to some extent be chalk and cheese, but my A10 is just such a better bike in every single way. I did not renew my membership to SoF this year and I’m not worthy to move amongst the company of the Sunshine Boys – but please do extend my regards to them.

Hi Cb really sorry to hear the way this bike as affected your thoughts towards it and I can relate to your approach to bikes in general particularly ,"I look after them ,they look after me" as I work on the same principle . However there are 2 marques that I avoid completely ,first AJS/Match box (  twins )  after  just to many engine blow ups on my friends bikes secondly Sunbeams S&/S8s  the grief one of those but a good friend of mine through (and this is still etched in my mind nearly 50yrs on ! ) was unforgettable, made much worse, I'm sure  when compared to the near 100% reliability of my plunger A10 . The worst bit I remember was that suddenly after messing about working on it with no luck and after changing nothing significant the bloody thing would run well ,appear reliable for  just for long enough to lull you into thinking it was sorted  when bang usually in the middle of nowhere , it would see it's bum and we'd not be able to get it going again. In the end he sold it for a petence to a guy who didn't even come back for the mountain of spares that was going with it !They would be worth a lot of cash now but they, I'm sorry to relate eventually went in the bin due to my friend not even wanting to try and sell 'em on . So some you just have to give up on ,perhaps you could p/x it for something else ???

Thanks.

Just to bring some balance to my diatribe of pain on this one; I should point out that all the members SoF (Sunbeam Owners Fellowship – the club specifically for this model) who were subject to my near constant whine were always 100% supportive to me on my ‘journey’ with this bike. They are an all-round great bunch. And also, that despite what I perceive to be some significant design side howlers on this model other members manage to keep their bikes rolling and to cover extensive distances both in the UK and on continental travels.

But the combination of me, this bike, my general ineptitude with spanners and a goodly dose of bad luck was a bridge too far. They do say that you should never meet your heroes.

I already bought the replacement – it is my Loopframe Guzzi – ‘Jug’. Hopefully my Sunbeam will find a loving owner who can get it running just so – and I can recoup a goodly percentage of my costs. I’m quite interested in filling that space with something a bit earlier – maybe a flat tank project. What could go wrong?
