Hi Gents, whist I was pondering AKA thinking inside my head!!! last night, can anyone supply me with the correct measurements of a throttle and air cable for my 1953 A10 plunger. I'm after the cable and outer lengths which will include the adjuster as mine looks a little too long.

I can't help with the lengths but I've yet to buy a cable that fits well (any of the cables cable actually) so I've grown to accept I will usually have to adjust and resolder one end of new cables.

My bike has non OEM controls and adjusters I suspect.

All you need is a bit of soft solder, flux and small blow torch. A dremel with cutting disc makes a really good job of cutting the inners and outers. I've yet to perfect getting ferrules off and on without making a bit of a mess of them though.

Hi kiwgf, I generally really make my own cables as I bought a supply of parts when a company near work was closing down. I bought a set of tools from Venhill years ago and they seem to have paid for them selves already.

I have a full set on the bikes but I feel they are too long as I'm sure I could make a spare we fir 3 bikes!!! If i can't find the lengths I will use the original ones cut the to suit and make a note of the details. Many thanks for all your help...

Yes, I think you've got to learn to be happy to do that.

back in the day they were made in 2" incriments to facilitate the different height & width of the various bars.
I can clearly remember walking into Omodies and being asked to select my bars from the ones hanging on the roof before they gave me a cable that was a perfect fit
Now days they come in 2 sizes

Typically, I’ve found the inners to be too long for their outers – which is probably the best way round. I just turn up some spacers to make up the difference – saves braking out he soldering iron and the swear box.

There's often NoS cables for most makes of bike on Ebay. Cut them down or modify to fit as required.
If you want new inners, outers, nipples, etc try "trialsbits.co.uk".

What really matters with Bowden type cables is the range of movement of the inner cable. The combined length of inner and outer only matters if its too short so cannot make gentle curves or so long that it looks silly. You could have a cable 10 metres long that still only has 1 inch of movement.

i used cable tec at sutton in ashfield some years ago to make mine
