It just occurred to me to wonder if my wife would know to make contact with the forum if I went suddenly. She certainly knows I'm active and have friends here, so she might try. On the other hand, this also brings me to wonder if the owner of the subject bike might have been a member of this forum who posted infrequently enough that we might not recognize his absence. Maybe we'll recognize pictures of the bike. Andy, maybe you could ask the lady if her husband belonged to any online BSA groups. Whatever you think is right, of course.

Hi all !

I finally went to take a closer look at my neighbour's bike and took a camera with me this time - hopefully there are a few pic's attached to this post ? !!!

I had a bit more time to look the bike over today, and I think I'd class it as in good condition, but showing signs of being stood for >10 years.  It's complete and the paintwork looks good, engine looks clean from the outside, rear wheel has excellent chrome, but the front has started to rust.  I had a quick look inside the tank and there is a fair bit of corrosion, so would definitely need some work to recommission, but I think it could be a very presentable and usable bike with not too much work, or an excellent base for a concours restoration.

I had a bit more of a look at the spares also, and there are quite a few !  There was a box of 100's of gaskets, a box with a few new chains, points, ammeters, bulbs and consumables, a new seat cover and also a new seat cover with foam, a set of spare exhaust downpipes and silencers, shock springs etc.  On the engine side, I found 2 new sets of 66mm Hepolite pistons, a complete and built bottom end that appeared to have a new cam - could be a new bottom end, but definitely very very clean if not, what looked like new barrels - definitely had been cleaned and rebored if not new, a cyl head, carb etc, - quite a lot of stuff and also a huge amount of old books on the bike that look like new !

Would really appreciate your thoughts on rough value of the bike as it is, and also the value of the parts - I think it would definitely be in her interest to sell separately !

Many thanks in advance for your help once more !

Andy

Sticking my neck out with regard to UK prices, but thinking at least 5,000 GBP for the bike and 1000 for the spares.

Very anxious to hear how wrong this is considered.

I'd be a bit more cautious in my valuation of the bike as it is an unknown quantity, maybe £3750 - £4000 provided there is valid paperwork and the engine and frame are an original 'couple'. The earlier Shooting Stars with the green frames tend to fetch a better price. It looks like the spares could be quite a treasure trove and, if as good as they look, worth more than £1000.... in my humble opinion!

Andy,

Since you're new here, let me tell you clearly, Beezermacc's opinion of prices is to be taken far more seriously than mine. Nevertheless, it was fun trying and I feel just a bit redeemed in that my guesses were on the planet.

Hi all,

I'm resurrecting a year old post concerning my neighbours Shooting Star.

Last year my neighbour was looking to get some idea of the value of her late husband's bike and accompanying spare parts and asked if I could help, hence I joined your forum and posted this thread.  I passed on what I learnt from all on here (many thanks)

A year on and she still has the bike and all the spares in her garage - she came to find me over the weekend and I think she has got to the point where she wants to sell it and all of the parts, so I'm again looking for advice and would be keen to hear from any one who might be interested.  I'll be clear that it's not my bike to sell, I'm just looking out for my neighbour !

If anyone is interested - if you have any questions or need more info, or photo's etc, then let me know.

Andy

A look at Ebay shows that even rough projects can easily make well over £3k.
I'd put it on Ebay with the description of "needs recommissioning" and with a starting price (or reserve) of £3000.

if you suggest whacking the bike and spares on ebay whats the point of coming to the forum. someone here on this site should come forward and do the bike justice.i have bought 2 really good bsa projects so far via this site. it would be such a shame to see such a lovely bike broken up for aurojumbles and spares.

I had a few enquiries when I first posted the thread last year, but my neighbour was not ready to sell at that point - she was trying to find out what it was worth.  A year later, and I think she's ready to let it go, so please let me know if anyone is interested.

Bugga! Postage to Australia would kill it.
Any UK or EU members like to make an offer?
A mate of mine just picked up a 71 T120 that I rebuilt for a friend just gone. $5K he got a bargain and the widow was happy.
