new amal mono block 389
« on: 26.05. 2009 21:06 »
hi all my amal has been flooding when i first turn
the petrol on it floods out ove the tickler so i have stripped
it down and have found that the float is made ove plastic
two halves weldid together and the joint is very rough
so i smoothed it down because that was causing it to
stick inside the body i think the old floats where the best
it has stopped sticking so ive cured it but you shouldent have
to do it in the first place

Hi Rocketman

I have heard there have been a few issues with the new Amal's and i have heard that when ordering them you can request it to be fitted with original pattern brass jets and fittings. I guess this is because of the odd issues theyve had.

Might be a handy tip if your contemplating ordering a new carb

Are plastic and brass floats interchangeable?
I have a vague memory of ,several years ago, trying to fit a plastic float into an original old monobloc (because it was all I had at the time). I think the geometry of it was slightly different and it didnt operate the needle valve properly.
let me know if im wrong.
Mike

Amal Monobloc floats are typically interchangeable, brass and plastic. Go to Amal's website to verify.
Check that the float needle isn't shutting off the fuel. Depending on the age of this carb, its cone might be ridged and failing to seal. The newest needles are Viton-tipped brass and don't suffer this problem as the older Nylon needles do.
