Hi all
« on: 17.08. 2016 20:34 »
Hi everyone I've just joined the happy band of BSA owners  *smiley4*

I've been riding 33 years, all year round (never bothered with a car) and have a collection bikes 2 Ducati's a couple of suzuki's and a another 2 yamaha's
but after visiting the West Kent international run/show a couple of weeks ago I had a hankering for something British and old.

so here she is

a 1958 A10SR   I know it's the wrong colour but I kinda like the gold

I'm a total beginner regarding British classic bikes, so expect lots of stupid questions  *smiley4* *smile*

I'm still wrestling with the right gear change but after a couple of short runs I'm starting to get it.

Regards

Mark

G'day Mark  *welcome*.
Beautiful bike mate.
I have the same problem with 2 Japanese and 2 BSA's. The first corner is always interesting.
Cheers

Nice looking bike Mark...   *wink2*  & welcome to the forum..
Why do you think it's a 58 model?...   56 - 57 type Ariel wheels..

Not sure Wozza, but I think they where used on and off through the years. I have a 1960 parts book which lists the Ariel hubs.
Maybe someone can confirm or disprove?

It came with sheets for the frame and engine from the BSA owners club proving model and age.

Yes they did some funny things back then. If they ran out of a part they'd rummage around and find anything that would fit! My plunger came with a rigid tool box. Or could it be that they had a 57 sitting in the corner and it didn't leave the factory till 58?
Cheers

We may then as well say it was Jack Sangster's (the Chairman) personal bike that he rode around until finally releasing it in '58. gives the whole thing more flavor.

It's more than likely that an earlier owner liked the Ariel wheels and fitted them. Or had an accident and replaced  the front end, note the earlier headlight, and fitted the matching rear wheel.
Probably liked the 1960 on tank also.
The problem with a dating certificate is that it only dates the frame and left hand crankcase.

Sorry Richard, but I don't hold with the theory that the factory fitted any old part when there were shortages. The buying public would surely reject any machine with features from the past which would devalue their purchase immediately.
I have never seen any documented evidence that the factory did this on the A7/10, only hearsay.
Having said all this, it is a nice looking bike, more character than a standard "factory" A10 from '58.
