The only forum member I met there was Paul. If there were any others I apologise for not finding you. In the end there must have been 200 bikes on the ride around Oxford. Average speed was about 15 mph. My left hand was aching after a while from operating the clutch. The weather was chilly and showery. After the ride I was sitting in a cold wet pub garden wearing wet tweed drinking cold beer, trying to keep dry. Not the best fun. I was very glad to get home and have a hot beverage! Not sure if I'll go again.

We left Rushmere with about 15 VMCC section members including 2 three wheelers. We had one breakdown that stopped us following the planned route and we lost a few after the coffee stop in Bury St Edmunds. The sun came out for the afternoon tea stop in Stowmarket. 93 miles when I parked up. There was some comment on my attempt at dressing for the distinguished gentlemen’s ride, but as the only one dressed up I ‘rode’ above it.

The Nowra ride was well supported with about 35 riders. The oldest bike was a 47 Indian, my 51 A7 was 2nd oldest. The weather was good for the ride, rain after lunch. I won the award for the 1st breakdown! Yes the old girl let me down and was brought home on a trailer. She was fine on the 50km ride up to Nowra and the first 15km of the DGR. Felt like running out of fuel, breaking down on one side then the other till she stopped. No spark from the 12v Boyer system but enough battery power to work the horn & stop light.
I'll investigate tonight.

The Kenyan DGR was supported by a relatively small turn out of 8 bikes.
My A10, despite being very close to being back on the road...wasn't and I took the Triumph. With a certain empathy with Muskrat, the Triumph did exactly the same as his bike with a CDI failure almost to the mile...and rode home in the back of a truck..I completed the ride on my 83 BMW R80 G/S having caught up with the rest of the pack.
Eric was the most admired DG rider who aged 15 managed the 140km ride with out incident and without getting caught by the police on an early 90's Royal Enfield despite stalling 50m from a police road block....
The ride ended at the Nairobi racecourse's annual concourse show and concluded with ride home in a monsoon grade downpour leaving all contemplating the practicalities of suits and motorcycles....
Fun was had by all...

Out in Cambridge we had a cloudy start, and just a couple of spots of rain at the rider briefing which cleared before we headed off. After which we got a good deal of sun and I rode probably two thirds of the route in my shirt sleeves. Traffic in the town there was appalling – I think the local authorities are trying to discourage traffic by making the road network there unfeasible. Either ways, it soon had my big iron block very nearly glowing. Clutch work was less of an issue for me GB as I have the option of both foot and hand operation of clutch on the Nimbus.

Of around 150 bikes total I spotted not a single A7/10. In fact I don’t even recall seeing a BSA unless you count the Sunbeam S8.

I’ll try and post some pics if I can get on to reducing them to fit.

Only just now, maybe the sport model with that high level exhaust? Wonder if it has the HC pistons. You had some good stuff on that run.

The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride is coming up on September 24th. I hope many of you will sign up and join the BSA A7/A10 Forum Ride (noted as “Worldwide”).

Now that my bike seems to be running well, it looks like I will make it again. Last year was my first, but a bit marred by a poorly adjusted clutch that made starting ridiculous and forced me to sneak up on 50 MPH. Nevertheless, I managed the ride and 60-mile round trip to the start-end point. Great fun, really, and for a good cause – prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.

Though a good time was had, there was one disappointment for me last year. That was how few of our over 900 members, all with big’ol prostates, chose to participate. Sooo, here is the link to the team. You will sign up as an individual, then join the team. Any donation you give in your own name also shows up as a team donation. (No money or benefit to me, other than knowing that more forum members are participating.) Here’s a little additional encouragement, though pittancely small (I ain’t rich), I will sponsor to the tune of $10, each (to the cause, of course), the first five forum members who sign up for their local ride and join the team after this message is sent. Ride or don’t ride, that’s up to you, but I’m thinking that if you sign up you just might ride.
