There is a "cruise night" like that near me. If they decide to raise $5,000 for a charity, the donation from each participant is equal. So, 50 entrants, $100.00 each. But you dont know in advance how many entrants, so you dont know how much.

I am now in fingers crossed/ducks-in-a-row mode for the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride. As part of my bike preparation I had planned to remove my sump plate to check for any nasties sitting on the screen. I should have checked it a week ago but put it off until yesterday. Sure enough, there lay a piece of mangled thin shim. This morning I threw a dial indicator on the timing end of the crank and quickly revealed at least 10 thou of float. No hesitation, it had to come apart.  A few hours later and the engine is now out. Done for today, but I'm now on a mission to complete a strip-down, replace main bearing and shims, clean sldge trap and do a general inspection faster than I've ever done it before.

Sooo, if I make it through this repair I'm going to be on a pretty tight bike for the DGR. Otherwise, I suppose I will try to make it to the start/end point to enjoy the spectacle.

I have to spread out working on the bike a little to keep on an even keel with SWMBO. I do think I could do the whole job in 12-16 hours if I kept on it.

I'll know better what caused it when I get inside. When I last put it together the inner race wasn't really tight on the crank, so I used Loctite 641 Retaining Compound (you might recall me talking about this). If it doesn't take 250 C. to remove the inner race from the crank that will say something, but I'm not yet sure what. I don't think loosening the cush nut took anything like 65 ft. lb. where I left it, anyway, I had used regular blue Loctite on it and it didn't appear to be backed off. I would really like to have a one-piece shim, because it is always the thin ones that show up in the sump. Problem is available time for the work. I certainly don't have the tools to make a precision one-piece shim.

I'll grind away at the fix (not referring to surface grinding a shim) and hope to be done by a week from now.

(Certainly umderstand if this needs to be moved to an "end float" topic.)

You'll get it mate. To my way of thinking the only way a shim could be pounded out is either the cush nut came loose or when you loctited the bearing it took you too long to slap the cases together and the bearing wasn't all the way home firm and the tightening of the nut didn't sandwich the shims tight.
Good luck.

I'm trying to change my ride from Canberra to Sydney (both over 200Km away), that website is so hard to navigate. I now learn there is a ride closer to home in Nowra (60 Km away). I'll be in Sydney on the Saturday to watch a mate race at Eastern Creek, then catch the Sydney ride on Sunday. Just looked at the 7 day forecast, yep rain. The A7 doesn't like rain (no airfilter), sucks in water.

Muskrat,

Will the site let you sign up for a second ride, so you could just ignore the first sign-up?

On another note, regarding my shims, the inner race was completely loose. I guess I need to put the problem on the cush nut backing off a little. I am pretty confident I tightened it to 65 ft. lb. I'm thinking maybe 70 is a more secure number. Any thoughts about that?

G'day Richard.
I just spent half an hour going round in circles trying. Bugger it I'll just show up at the Sydney ride.
I'd be inclined to fit the shims & bearing (with the loctite) and also fit the spacer, sleeve and nut done up while its out of the cases till the loctite goes off. Then assemble as normal.
Cheers

Just been back on their web site myself - it's really not great. I'm on the Cambridge (UK) ride but can't tell if I'm signed up to a team or not. Still hoping to run the Nimbus out there, though I wasn't sure the clutch wasn't slipping when I was out and about Thursday evening. I'll likely not ride if it's wet, though I think the forecast is set for dry OK.

Is there anyone here doing the Cambridge ride?

I'll be at Oxford, Graybeard, on a Thruxton R, looking something like this. Always assuming that I can find the meeting point.

See you there.
