Shot carb, options please.
« on: 21.04. 2016 20:06 »
Well, Im back home and just stripped my carb.

First off the float needle is sticking in its seat and the carb has a fuel flow issue.

Main jet is corroded, slide (throttle slide) is pitted

Needle is a gonner.

Am I better off just buying a new carb for almost the same price as the parts?

What about the Mikuni Conversions?

Rob,
Contact Hitchcocks (excellent web site) & buy a new Amal. it will come with factory jetting to suit your bike, and your bike will start easily, and idle very smoothly!.

I'd like to know about Mikuni conversions too. I've had too many Amals in my life.
I recently got a brand new Mikuni for my TY175 trials bike, for A$32 delivered to Oz. It's hard to think of throwing a few hundred on an Amal that I know will be prone to wear and distortion.
Currently my SR shares it's carb with my Venom. (Swapping). I have a worn Concentric, and a Monoblock 389 with a worn top main thread. If there was an economical repair option I'd do it.
But you have to admit, a new Mikuni at those sort of prices looks good.

I'm running a Mikuni on my bitsa A10 and am very pleased. Mind you I also converted to electronic ignition so the easy start, smooth running and hard stops at traffic lights without the engine dying could be due to either *smile*

I got the Mikuni as a ready set-up kit from Allens in Bingham.

Any chance of a rundown on the Mikuni specs, size, type, jetting etc?

Got my amal from Hitchcocks today... I`ll sort it on saturday.

As for the Mikuni, I have bought a couple off Allens for my Lambrettas and they are very knowledgable.

Maybe next time for me.

Hi Again Fellas,

Beautiful weather here this last weekend so I managed to 300km`s on the clock.

I think I maybe running a little rich.

It is very easy to start, but I dont have to tickle the carb or use any choke, so I think either my pilot jet is a little high or airscrew a bit to tight.

I also get a little popping in low revs. Ive never dabbled in 4 strokes before so I would like an opinion. Also the throttle responce is a tad wooly compared to what I think it should be. I think this is due to the fact that the needle might not be set propperly. at the mo its in second clip from bottom, does that sound right?

Good to see you get out for a decent ride.
Fairly sure normal needle setting is the middle, so 2nd from bottom would contribute to richness I think 1/4- 2/3? ( those more knowledgeable will say better)
Mine's been popping a bit down low too, but gets better as it warms up (note to self, one remedy is don't go low revs *smile*)

 'Normal' pilot jet is 25
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'
Have a '74 850T Moto Guzzi since '92-best thing I ever bought doesn't need a kickstart 'cos it bump starts sooooooooo(mostly) easy

Sorry, only just seen your post. I'll see if I've kept a record (I'm not stripping it down!) as I bought it all set up by Allens. I did change the jet after getting the bike dyno'd mind (Note: never get your bike dyno'd, it only leads to disappointment)
