Swingarm gearbox gears
« on: 09.01. 2016 23:30 »
Tomcat's Ultimate motorcycle is slowly coming together.
I've just dismantled the Super Rockets gearbox to find all the gears pitted, so am looking at possible options.
1/ Buy any gear box that's for sale till I end up with enough good gears  *smiley4*
2/ Post a letter to BSA in Small Heath and order new gears  ;)
3/ Go to a small engineering business and get new gears made  *conf*
4/ http://www.novaracing.co.uk/ProductBSAGoldStarTouring.html  *eek*
5/ Ask all of the lovely folk from the A7/A10 forum if they have any good second hand gears available for sale (hopefully in Oz)  *smile*
Cheers Tomcat

Tomcat depending on how many of the gears need replacing it may be cheaper to buy another box, provided you can inspect it internally first of course.

NOS gears do come up but usually expensive, like this one for instance.

Have you sent Terry a e-mail, he may be able to help.

Goulburn swap is next Sunday for a start.
Mike Riley has stacks of gears and a few boxes to boot but he knows exactly what they are worth.
Most Pommie BSA retailers will have a reasonable range of gears. tht is the beauty of BSA making their own boxes.
Almost any pre-unit BSA box is a source of donor gears, right down to C10 11 & 12.

you can add
http://www.ttindustries.com/bsa_gearbox.html to the options if you have deep pockets.

How bad are the dogs? I do have a good supply of reasonable second hand dogs, so can probably supply enough for a reasonable outcome. They wont be new though.
The boxes are quite tough and can cope with wear quite well. Its typically the gear to gear meshing wear on the same shaft between dogs that causes missing gears.

What are your main and layshafts like. The latter typically need attention.

Pm me if you get stuck.

Thanks Trev for this comment...

Ive had half a C12 4 speed box for years, taken it to a lot of swap meets and couldn't sell it for $20, turns out the gears in it were in VGC and are now going into my Super Rocket. The rest (NOS)are on the way from Mike Reilly. I owe you a beer. Thank you. TC

Hi TC,
THe C gearbox gears does not have the same number of engagement dogs as the A gearbox
half as many means half the strength *ex*
They are also made from a different material,
Late A gears are stamped EN36 which is a good as it gets

Thanks John, I've just had another look and the gears are identical to the S/A A10 gears, and have EN36 stamped on them. So in this case all good. I am now collecting C12 4 speed boxes from swap meets! Cheers TC

Hi TC,
Hmmm???
I have a few C boxes but the gears are definitely different to A
Maybe someone fitted A gears to your C gearbox ?? Lucky You *ex*
Comparison of the part numbers would be the only definite way to confirm ????

Cheers

John, a friend of mine has used many C12 gears in his A boxes, he reckons that they are the same also. Not all of them but some.
