What dynamo end cap ?

I put this E3L together with some odd parts and have a cover band (The one with the securing screw in set 200609 and a little notch on one edge ) But, can any one tell me if either of the Bakelite or the 1 piece cover will fit ? Can I use any cover ?

Cannot help with your question but have you painted the dynamo body? If so you need to make sure you provide a good earth connection.

  I modified an E3L with a band type end cover to accept the later alloy one piece part, but it involves filing the small alloy locating boss on the dynamo body flush, and modifying or replacing the tufnol brush plate with the later type which has the internal female wire connections.  Also there is no provision for the o ring which should seal the one piece cover, and you need the rubber cable entry grommet.
 Probably not worth the hassle. You can get repro plastic end covers to suit the band set up you have.

Thanks Greybeard, I will bare that in mind, and thanks U2, this dynamo doesn't have a locating boss (Although the band that I have has a notch for one ) And as long as I address the points that you made, the one piece cover would fit or either of the plastic ones (I didn't know if it mattered what plastic cover I get ?)

This is a really timely question for me. For want of two cents worth of locktite I lost my chromed end cover, the type described by Ivor, having the screw recess in the bump-out. It turns out these covers are not in great supply as they are not common on eBay and are either out of stock at stockists or really pricey. Anyone care to suggest a reasonable source?

Ivor, that is not an E3L but an E3H.
You have to use the end cap with the central hole and oil hole.
The cover band can be the one with the turned up end with external screw or the later type with the recesses but you will really need to fit a screw in the side of the end plate to locate the cover or risk the screw contacting the brush box.

If you're in real need, De Groot in the Netherlands has a plastic one. Not expensive and at least it'll keep the dynamo's internals out of the weather while searching for a metal cover.

Thanks. I checked out the Degroot part earlier this morning. Not knowing it was plastic, I sent them a question asking if it was metal. Based on what you've said. now I know it is not.

Morris reponded while I was typing. I had assumed He was pointing me to the DeGroot part and I do have an E3L, so I think it would be the right fit. In the mean time, having forgotten whether or not my barn-find A7 came with one, I checked the garage and was pleasantly surprised to find it did, so I can put off a purchase until the right one comes along.

Yes, sorry Trev it's an E3L BTW Congratulations on passing that observance test  I don't know what that brush holder came off tho. I didn't understand what you meant about the locating screw, but I will check that the band screw clears before putting the cover on and finally tightening the band.

Ivor, that is a standard E3H brush plate and end.
The locating screw is on the side of some of the end plates, those that use the E3L type cover band.
The end plate for the common E3H cover band doesn't have the screw.
Early E3L end plates have a screw, later changed to a cast in locator.
