Drip tray on longstrokes?
« on: 28.07. 2014 18:19 »
Hi,

tried to install the usual after market drip tray at my long stroke engine. Managed it finally but only with a lot of bending and cutting the tray. I now suppose that the drip tray was installed only on the later engines not on longstrokes.

Was the drip tray usally only beyond the carb and not beyond the float?

And: There is a Amal 76 on the engine. Is there  an insert (with an orifice ?) opposite the idle needle or not? Actually I can only see the end of the needle in the hole.

Regards
 Rudolf

I too have one of those carbs not on a bike at the moment and wondered if there should be a plug there.

On my Longstroke the float bowl is on the right hand side and the drip tray fits nicely.

Thats a pre war carby, different design. They have the ring of holes around the base whereas the post war ones dont.

If you can read the numbers on the top right of the flange I might be able to tell you what its originally off, I have some pre war carby listings.

Hi Rudolf,
I have a drip tray on mine and it fits fine though it is an original one. Also my float chamber is on the right. I did find that some of the after market ones are wider.
The correct carb for a 1948 A7 is an Amal 276CY/1A  with a bore of 15/16". The 276 takes its air for the pilot jet through a hole in the main air intake mouth whilst the pre war type 76 takes it from 4 holes around the body base.  This was originally a military requirement that they asked Amal to do to ensure all air passed through an air filter. They are basically the same carb except for that.
Cheers, John

Thanks Brian,Tom and John!

the previous owner has installed an  Amal 76AG/1AU with an 6/3 slide. Except the bit to fast tick over and the too black plugs it works fairly good.

If the float is on the right side how you can acces  the idle equipment? Or is there another body where this is on the left side?

The trip tray I got overlapped the magneto and the ignition lines, so I first hat to bend it a lot more. Will look for an original. Any sources?

Thank you Tom,

in both sources I found 2 part numbers: 67-527 and 67-120. No more comments  and similar pictures, which will fit the longstroke !?

I also found that the Amal 276 EU (for the 52 A7) has a right hand float, the 276 CY (for the 48 A7) has a left hand float. Will now look for one of them.

And I was told that the Amal 76 AG is original for a AJS Model 20.

I had a look in my Amal literature and it does list the 76AG for the Model 20 but I think it is a misprint, to the best of my knowledge none of that style of carby were used post war.

I have a 1952 Norton Model 7 Dominator that has a Amal 76AK/1AT fitted as original so they were still being fitted as standard in the early 1950's. John

My BSA A7 (1949) has a 275 carburettor (I think it is original as well as 276 carb.) and float bowl on right hand side; with no problems to fit a tray.
