My TLS brake for the Longstroke
« on: 29.10. 2013 17:30 »
Inspired from recent topics about A7/A10 TLS-Brakes
especially  the picture of Rocket Racer (http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=6043.msg41302#msg41302) and the excellent articles of Jeffery Diamond  about drum brakes ( http://victorylibrary.com/brit/SLS-TLS-c.htm) (See Picture 1)
I wanted to improve known poor braking on my A7-Longstroke.

So I started my project TLS for the 7 Inch front, half  width drum with steel brake plate (1949-55).

As all  later BSA/Triumph TLS Brakes  won’ t  fit easily the specific fork  of the Longstroke  and also don’t have the right “optics” I decided to build it by my own in my little private shop.

Most of the needed parts I found in my shed and by Internet. The linkage is from the Triumph TLS Brake  37-3453/54. (The outer TLS Brake Arm Return Spring  is still coming).

Some minor parts (e.g. additional sleeve for the second cam) I made on my little lathe. More critical was the changes to the cams by adding the“Quarter-moons” (made from the original fulcrum pin) for fitting the original brake shoes (see pictures).
Next steps are testing and the optical  finishing of the parts.

Are the half moons mounted to the cams "flat surface to flat surface," clamped only by the countersunk screw?

At the moment: YES
after testing (and perhaps changing the geometry?) they will be welded/brazed on.

Clever little vegimite.
The next step would be to modify some shoes to full floating, which would eliminate the need to modify the cams.

I  needed a little bit *????* for investigate this true blue „vegemite”:

Is it standing by your mate / When he's in a fight? / Or just Vegemite? *idea*

I found it better to modify the cams to retain the original brake shoes for easy replacement.

Very nice modification Rudolf.

"clever little vegemite", its a local saying thats a bit difficult to describe. It means you are smart, "clever cookie" or maybe "clever clogs" if you have ever heard of any of those.

A term or endearment is how the dictionary would probably describe it.

Clever little Vegemite yourself, Brian.
Mostly we are happy little Vegemites.
Just an Aussie thing.

That's a very clever mod Rudolf.
My only concerns are the angle the inner cable leaves the outer (could promote cable wear) and the angle it joins the lever (for optimum leverage).

Yes Musky I know,

but the new (standard) cable is too long.
I had still to customize the length and than I can change the lever position.

In the meantime (after some hard testing) the shoes fit the drum very well and the brake now shows the spec's I hoped for: about 20% more then the old brake !
